Whip Kirby is an obvious passing reference to the action hero Indiana Jones, as the latter has an extensible coiled whip that can be used to grab objects. The former has the latter's fedora, except with a star motif.
The whip is similar to the Yarn Whip in Kirby's Epic Yarn. Both are whips that Kirby uses to pull in enemies and items, as well as to attack. However, the Yarn Whip can only grab enemies and throw them while the whip can also be used to hit enemies.
Notes from the ESRB that explain Kirby: Triple Deluxe’s E rating explicitly mention the Whip ability, saying: "As players traverse through colorful levels, they defeat enemies by swallowing them, spitting back projectiles or using “cartoony” weapons (e.g., swords, whips, bows)."
