Rick & Kine & Coo

Three pals from Kirby's Dream Land 2 join the fray! They've formed a dream-team trio, so they can help each other out. Rick rules the land. Kine swims the seas. Coo soars through skies. Animal friends forever!
— Rick & Kine & Coo • Kirby Star Allies

Rick & Kine & Coo is a Dream Friend in Kirby Star Allies. It consists of the three Animal Friends from Kirby's Dream Land 2, Rick, Kine, and Coo.

Games

Kirby Star Allies

Rick & Kine & Coo behaves as a singular character, switching between characters depending on the situation. When on land or jumping, the player controls Rick. When in or under water, the player controls Kine. When flying through the sky, the player controls Coo. Rick can use his versions of Burning and Stone, allowing him to give the Sizzle element and be used for Stone's various Curling Friend Abilities, as well as Geokinesis and Rock Painter. Rick also has the unique trait ob being able to jump on enemies without taking damage; he also retains his ability to climb up walls. Coo can use his versions of Parasol and Cutter from Kirby's Dream Land 2, allowing him to give the Bluster element and cut ropes. Coo also flies by flapping his wings, which do damage to nearby enemies. If the player air dodges while using Coo, he will transform back into Rick, which can allow for a Stomp or perform Fire Rick at an elevated height. Kine can use his version of Ice from Kirby's Dream Land 2, and freezing over doesn't leave him vulnerable to damage. Kine can also be activated on land where he flops around, allowing him to give the Splash element. Kine's Ice Kine can give the Blizzard element as well, but this exchange can only be done at the surface of water, making its usage very limited; CPU Rick & Kine & Coos also won't try to do this, effectively limiting them to just Sizzle, Bluster, and Splash. Due to Rick & Kine & Coo's amount of available elements (on par with Daroach in most situations and The Three Mage-Sisters in a few situations), having access to all of Stone's Friend Abilities, and ability to cut ropes, Rick & Kine & Coo is a versatile Dream Friend.

If Cook uses Cook Potluck or Supper Party, each character drops a different food item. Rick drops a carrot, Kine drops sushi, and Coo drops roast chicken.

Techniques
Attack Controls Description Element Damage
Fire Rick B This attack works the same as Rick + Burning from Kirby's Dream Land 2 and 3. Sizzle 8 per hit
Stone Rick Dash + B This attack works the same as Rick + Stone from Kirby's Dream Land 2 and 3. However, when combined with the Blizzard, Splash, or Bluster Elements, Rick transforms into a curling stone. When combined with ESP, Stone Rick becomes giant and is electrified; he will eventually be forced to transform back after a while, however. When combined with paint from Artist or Adeleine, Rick transforms into a giant painted statue of the animal trio. None 46 (Stone Change), 8 (rolling), 20 (Change Back, Shock Wave)
Parasol Coo Dash + B in midair This attack works the same as Coo + Parasol from Kirby's Dream Land 2 and 3. Bluster 10 per hit
Flutter A in midair Unlike other friends, Coo cannot fly by holding down the A button. In order to gain altitude, the A button must be pressed repeatedly. None 4
Cutter Coo B in midair after Flutter This attack works the same as Coo + Cutter from Kirby's Dream Land 2. Bluster 12 per Cutter
Fish Flop ↓ + B Kine flops on the ground, doing mild damage. Splash 16 per hit
Ice Kine B underwater This attack works the same as Kine + Ice from Kirby's Dream Land 2. Due to it only being accessible in the water, this ability (alongside Kine Freeze) can only give friends the Blizzard element in specific circumstances where Kine is floating on the water's surface and the friend is standing on nearby land. Blizzard 20 per hit
Kine Freeze Hold B underwater If Kine uses Ice Kine for an extended period of time, he will be frozen into a block of ice. In this state, he can be knocked into enemies by friends. Blizzard 4 (frozen), 16 (freeze end)
Protective Bag L/R Rick hides in a bag similar to the one he is trapped inside in Kirby's Dream Land 2. This works the exact same way as blocking, although Rick cannot dodge while in this state. None 16 (Guard End)
Stomp Stomp on enemies as Rick Unlike the majority of friends in Kirby Star Allies, jumping on enemies will deal damage to the enemy instead of dealing damage to Rick. None 16

Kirby: Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon - Round 1

Hi everyone, it took us a while to set up but now it's finally time to kick off the Kirby: Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon! And here to answer your questions is the man himself, Kirby: Planet Robobot's director Shinya Kumazaki!

3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/09/2016 10:49 AM Hello! Shinya Kumazaki here. Honestly, I'm amazed at the tremendous number of questions we've received from Japan, the Americas and Europe. Naturally I can't answer them all, but I'm hoping I can give you at least some of the answers you're looking for. Mr Ishida, please fire away!
1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/09/2016 10:51 AM All right, let's get started. Here's the first question: How did you decide upon 'Kirby: Planet Robobot' for the game title?
3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/09/2016 10:56 AM Initially, we'd planned to call it "Kirby: HAGANE" ("hagane" is Japanese for "steel"), but as Popstar would be populated by robots, we then leaned towards "Kirby: Robot Planet". As titles go, this was far too literal and lacked impact, so we changed it again to "Roborobo Planet". One last tweak and the result was "Planet Robobot", which is in keeping with the playfulness of the Kirby universe. The name for the "Robobot Armor" also came up around this time.
1lm9ymn6jpkxm surprised face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/09/2016 10:59 AM Interesting! I do think that "HAGANE" would have been perhaps a little too edgy for a Kirby game. Plus, I can see it being quite a difficult title to convey overseas.

Now for the next question: What was it that inspired you to create this game, and how long did it take to produce it?

3d0lao00u0xeu normal face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/09/2016 11:03 AM Since we ended up developing two Kirby games in a row using the same hardware - the first being Kirby: Triple Deluxe - this time, we wanted to do a completely different take on the world. At the same time, we were also hoping to attract a new audience. We thought a mechanized world would do well, since then it would be the polar opposite to the previous game's warm skies and lush scenery. The concept for the Robobot Armor was then proposed as a means of performing new copy abilities unique to the mechanized world.

Regarding the length of development, we worked on Planet Robobot in parallel with other titles such as Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe, and it was completed in under two years.

1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/09/2016 11:05 AM When you were establishing this mechanized setting for the game world, how did the production team manage to strike a balance between the creative design and fun gameplay?
3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/09/2016 11:09 AM At the start, we shared our game design plans with the whole team - these were vital to the game. I began by working out the story and setting in my head, conveyed my ideas to lead team members and then the staff got to work, flexing their creative muscles to generate text, rough sketches and other resources. We worked to mesh the design and gameplay only in the final stages of the development process, and things were all very hectic during this period. We would schedule meetings with the whole team to keep everyone on the same page and fully bring out the team's potential, and this helped to motivate everyone even more in the finishing stages.
1lm9ymn6jpkxm surprised face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/09/2016 11:11 AM It's so interesting to hear about the steps that led to the final product! I have to ask, was there a specific part of the creation process that you found especially challenging? And if you had the chance to redesign the whole game, would you want to improve any specific areas of it?
3d0lao00u0xeu normal face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/09/2016 11:14 AM We were instructed by our producer to avoid any situation that might remind players of Triple Deluxe and I think that although this was a great idea, it was a nightmare to put into practice. We had limited development time and still had to make use of the assets from the previous game. Because we were using Triple Deluxe's engine, a lot of the gameplay felt similar, so I was constantly fighting to preserve the Kirby series' distinctive feel and yet produce something fresh and new. There were, of course, many things that I would have liked to refine or improve, but rather than regret not being able to address them, I try to use those shortcomings as motivation to look to the future and help myself do a better job next time. It's a continuous process that never really ends.
1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/09/2016 11:15 AM In Planet Robobot, I got the impression that you included references to older Kirby games and tried to evoke the same feel as them. Are you quite fond of the earlier titles? Were there any parts of them that influenced the current title?
3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/09/2016 11:20 AM I don't believe that Kirby would still be around if it weren't for the older series of games. Meta Knight and the Fountain of Dreams, debuting in Kirby's Adventure, returned in Kirby Super Star (known as Kirby's Fun Pak in Europe), and many of Kirby's friends and foes from Kirby's Dream Land 2 reprised their roles in Kirby's Dream Land 3. We're still continuing this trend of including characters and locations from past games. There's a huge amount of charm unique to Kirby games and we've got 24 years' worth of it to tap into. By incorporating some of that into Planet Robobot, we hope that newcomers to the Kirby series will be able to enjoy the more retro elements of the gameplay just as much as the newer ones. If that happens to spark their interest in the older titles too, we couldn't ask for more.
1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/09/2016 11:21 AM All right, one last question. I'm sure some of our readers are getting fed up with all the game development questions, so let's move on to a different category!

We've been receiving questions from all over the world along the lines of "Is Susie Haltmann's real daughter?" and "Is Susie a clone or a robot?". Mr Kumazaki, would you mind clearing things up for us once and for all and telling us her identity?

3d0lao00u0xeu normal face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/09/2016 11:24 AM Allow me to explain: Susie is not a clone; she is Haltmann's real daughter. I'd had in mind two story paths - one in which you finish the game and the story concludes comfortably even without knowing Susie's identity, and one that reveals more answers after you sink a lot of time into the game. But in Planet Robobot, the story is designed with just a small twist to surprise you when you find out Susie's last name. I initially considered making it so that Haltmann, in his loneliness, created a robotic Susie who believed she was alive, but that idea was discarded to avoid overcomplicating the story. At the time, I also considered a scenario with one final twist, where you discover that Haltmann was actually a robot all along.
1lm9ymn6jpkxm happy face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/09/2016 11:25 AM Wow! There you have it, fans - the definitive answer you've been waiting for! We've still got plenty of questions lined up for Mr Kumazaki, but I think we're going to call it a day here. Watch this space for round 2 of the Kirby: Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon!

Kirby: Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon - Round 2

Hi, this is Satoshi Ishida from HAL Laboratory. Today we'll be hosting round 2 of the Kirby: Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon and, as before, director Shinya Kumazaki is here to answer your questions!

3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/25/2016 9:59 AM Nice to see you again. Today I'm hoping to answer behind-the-scenes questions about Planet Robobot that you wouldn't normally be able to find out from simply playing the game.
1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/25/2016 10:00 AM It seems there are a lot of people out there who read very deeply into the game as they're playing. I'd like to start us off with a question about Meta Knight:

At the start of the game, we see the Halberd get shot down, but by the time it shows up again, it's in full working order. Who repaired it?

3d0lao00u0xeu normal face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/25/2016 10:03 AM The Halberd made a crash landing between the cliffs in the space directly beneath Access Ark. Meta Knight was then captured by the Haltmann Works Co., but managed to entrust the Halberd to his crew. As a result, the repairs were finished in time and the Halberd could rush to Kirby's rescue, with Meta Knight back to his old self. But when Meta Knight shouted for Kirby to get on board, he didn't expect Kirby to ignore his offer and scan the Halberd's ability instead...
1lm9ymn6jpkxm surprised face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/25/2016 10:04 AM And here I thought Meta Knight was the one telling Kirby to scan it...

Speaking of Meta Knight, here's a question about Meta Knightmare Returns. Is there any connection plotwise between this mode and the main game's Story Mode?

3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/25/2016 10:07 AM It's basically an alternate storyline. Meta Knightmare Returns is a kind of bonus mode that you unlock after finishing the main game, but that alone doesn't hold much appeal for a player so we made it into a "what if" scenario.

Kirby games tend to be quite deep and have lots of content, and this game is no exception. There are two sides to the story: one for players who just want to casually play it from start to finish, and another for those who want to delve deeper into the game world. This mode fully realizes that two-sided method of development.

1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/25/2016 10:09 AM While we're on the topic of Meta Knightmare Returns, Galacta Knight was supposed to be sealed away in a crystal, but he broke that seal and showed up again in The True Arena. Are Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena connected at all in relation to the story?
3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/25/2016 10:11 AM The True Arena is like another "what if" scenario, so you can't really consider everything to be connected. Furthermore, the extra-dimensional road that opens up when Galacta Knight appears transcends space-time, so it's difficult to give it a concrete place in the timeline. But if you consider the stages in which Galacta Knight appeared in the past three games, I think that will give you some food for thought.

Also, once Galacta Knight has shown up, it should be clear why he cuts down Star Dream: it forced him to travel through time and space and so he considers Star Dream his enemy. That's why Galacta Knight appears as an antagonistic sort of character.

1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/25/2016 10:12 AM The name Star Dream came up just now. Could you tell us how Haltmann got his hands on the blueprints and technology for Star Dream?

Others also noted that the Security Force blueprints bore similarities with Metal General from Kirby's Return to Dream Land, and the data for Holo Defense API resembled Pix from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Could you tell us a bit about those?

3d0lao00u0xeu normal face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/25/2016 10:14 AM Haltmann travelled to numerous planets around the galaxy to collect their blueprints and technology. He may have gone to Halcandra, or perhaps to a planet with strong connections to it. As for Holo Defense API, Haltmann gained access to numerous different worlds after Susie was accidentally sent into another dimension and this is how he acquired that data.
1lm9ymn6jpkxm surprised face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/25/2016 10:16 AM I see, so that's how you're making use of elements from previous games. Now for a question about Star Dream - during that fight, you can see the company logo on some of the planets in space. Did Haltmann Works Company conquer these planets? If that's the case, what happened to them after Star Dream was defeated?
3d0lao00u0xeu normal face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/25/2016 10:18 AM Those planets were under Haltmann's control, yes. The logos signify Star Dream's heartlessness and are proof of Haltmann's wickedness in invading those planets. The logo material was made using Star Dream's super-advanced technology, so when Star Dream was destroyed, the logos vanished along with it. That means that the planets should now be back to normal.

I should also point out that the soulless evil weapons were wiped out, but some things that were out of Star Dream's reach escaped the destruction.

1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/25/2016 10:20 AM Like Susie's Business Suit? That reminds me, why did Haltmann lose his memories of the past along with his compassion? Did he discard them himself, or did Star Dream erase them? Also, Susie was appointed executive assistant, wasn't she? I suspect there was there some hidden meaning to this...
3d0lao00u0xeu puzzled face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/25/2016 10:22 AM In order to control Star Dream, you need a program controller on your head to have it directly interface with your brain. Haltmann may have suspected memory loss from the beginning, or it may have been an unknown side effect... But the fact is that he started losing his memories bit by bit. This tells you just how incomplete Star Dream really was. Later, after Susie grew up and came back, Haltmann sensed something about her and made her his assistant, but at that time he had completely forgotten that he'd even had a daughter to begin with.
1lm9ymn6jpkxm frustrated face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/25/2016 10:24 AM That's really quite sad... Well, after that big revelation, here's a question about the background music. There seem to be a lot of tracks that are slightly redone versions of ones from previous games. Is this because you were trying to please old-school fans? On a related note, there are many tracks whose names people would like to know. Would you be able to disclose any of them?
3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 08/25/2016 10:25 AM With regard to the re-arranged tracks, we have of course tried to cater to our long-time fans as well as newcomers. We wanted to reinvent classic tracks to create something fresh and new, something that fits the current generation's taste.

I'm actually really surprised at how many questions we received about track titles. That really makes me happy because I love being able to add more depth to the world through text, be it with dialogue, ability names or music tracks. That said, there were a lot of inquiries about the tracks, so I think it would be best if we save those for later.

1lm9ymn6jpkxm like face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 08/25/2016 10:27 AM So we can look forward to a number of music-related questions next time. We're going to be having one last round of questions to conclude our Kirby: Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon. Please stay tuned!

Kirby: Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon - Round 3

Satoshi Ishida from HAL Laboratory here. It's time to begin round 3 of the Kirby: Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon! Mr Kumazaki, please take it away!

3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 09/07/2016 1:52 PM Thank you, it's nice to be back again. I think today will be the last of our Q&A sessions. And we'll be discussing some topics for the die-hard fans this time!
1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 09/07/2016 1:53 PM OK, here's question number one: Some copy abilities from the previous game aren't present in the new one. How did you decide which abilities would make it into the game?
3d0lao00u0xeu frustrated face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 09/07/2016 1:55 PM In the past 5 or 6 years, we've gained over 10 new abilities so we're always struggling to balance out the old and new ones. We were also restricted by development time and hardware limitations. But even from the perspective of game balance, once you go over 25 copy abilities, you start to see an effect on the frequency of each ability per stage and on the balancing for the new Robobot elements. Even with the limited number of abilities that made the cut, the command inputs make up for it with a wide variety of actions so it isn't such a problem.
1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 09/07/2016 1:57 PM You'd think having more copy abilities would be more fun, but it actually seems like a lot of hard work. Now then, I wonder if you could tell us about these track names that people have been wondering so much about!
3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 09/07/2016 2:05 PM Alright, let me address them in order of their numbers in the Jukebox. [Literal translations of the Japanese titles follow:]

006 Venturing into the Mechanized World
021 Bountiful Star
029 VS. The Wicked Company
033 Dried-up Sea

Most of the questions are concerned with the first half. 029 is a personal favorite of mine! Next, here are the tracks that really heat things up as you approach the climax of the story. [Again, these are literal translations of the Japanese titles.]

083 L86
086 Crazy Rolling in Money
091 VS. Star Dream
092 Fatal Error
093 Intermezzo Without a Leader
094 First Cry of a Newborn Star
095 Vagrant Counting Song of Retrospection

I put a lot of effort into these particular final boss themes. Here's a small piece of trivia for you: for track 094, I wanted a voice that sounded like a baby's cry, but somewhat different and inhuman. What you're actually hearing are the meows of my pet cat. The sound of the weathervane during battle in track 095 comes from chickens that a member of the sound team keeps at home.

1lm9ymn6jpkxm surprised face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 09/07/2016 2:07 PM That came from chickens?! That's quite a source of inspiration. Alright, the next question is related to previous titles: Kabula and Landia both feature in Planet Robobot, but Heavy Lobster doesn't show up, even though it's a machine. Why is that?
3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 09/07/2016 2:08 PM We got a lot of questions about Heavy Lobster. It's nice to add some flavor from Kirby Super Star (Kirby's Fun Pak in Europe) but we always have to think about which enemies from the previous games we want to include while considering the game balance. In this case, we settled on using Kabula because it fits the shooting sequences well and because it's a mechanical boss. As for Landia, a 4-player co-op medieval-style RPG minigame wouldn't be the same without a dragon now, would it?
1lm9ymn6jpkxm puzzled face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 09/07/2016 2:10 PM While we're on the topic of character appearance, King Dedede hardly featured at all this time. The Dedede Clones did make an appearance, though. Why did you decide upon using clones and not a modified version of the character like Mecha Knight?
3d0lao00u0xeu normal face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 09/07/2016 2:11 PM We wanted a lot of characters to feature, and I think that main characters like King Dedede and Meta Knight are finally starting to gain some recognition.

We felt that for players who've played several games in the series, reusing King Dedede in the same way was becoming a little bland, so we worked in the clone angle to work alongside new characters like Susie and Taranza and fit in with the direction the series is going.

1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 09/07/2016 2:14 PM Now for a question about the main character Meta Knight - specifically, about the color of his eyes. In the moment that Mecha Knight+'s mask cracks, the player gets a glimpse of Meta Knight's eyes, which appear to be yellow. Were they always this way? I was sure they were white before...
3d0lao00u0xeu surprised face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 09/07/2016 2:16 PM That's quite a thing to spot. In Kirby's Adventure on the Famicom (NES), Meta Knight's eyes are indeed white. At that time, there was a limit to the number of colors you could use, so I think that white was chosen because it stood out more.

They were also white in Kirby Super Star (EU: Kirby's Fun Pak), but when we created the 3D model for this game, giving him white eyes somehow didn't feel right. And besides, his eyes have always shone with a yellow glow from behind his mask. We were worried about how old-school fans might react to this, but for the purposes of the design, we settled on yellow eyes.

1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 09/07/2016 2:18 PM I'd like to group the next three questions together.

No. 1: Did you increase the overall difficulty level for this game?
No. 2: There seem to be a lot more cinematic effects this time. Was this deliberate?
No. 3: The opening movie sequence was a lot shorter this time round. Why is that?

3d0lao00u0xeu normal face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 09/07/2016 2:20 PM All right, I'll explain. Regarding the difficulty, I think that you should still be able to complete the main game with relative ease (easy enough for a developer's 4-year-old daughter to defeat the bosses in levels 1-3). But for the modes that are unlocked after completing Story Mode, we cranked the difficulty right up and challenged players to try and give it their best shot.

Next, we used movie-like camera angles to reinforce the sci-fi theme. And during boss fights, we utilized pauses and moments of foreboding to give players with less experience in the action genre more time to orient themselves. And as for the opening movie, the reason why it's so short is because last time we depicted key items and daily life in great detail. We decided to forego that this time because players are already familiar with those kinds of stage-setting scenes from the rest of the series. We instead chose to leap straight into the moment of the disaster.

1lm9ymn6jpkxm happy face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 09/07/2016 2:22 PM And now for the final question, which concerns Kirby's partners, the Robobots. A Robobot weeps tears at the end - can we take this to mean that it has become sentient? And will Kirby ever meet one again?
3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 09/07/2016 2:23 PM What you saw was coolant leaking from the Robobot's eyes. This scene, depicting a tender-hearted Robobot, stands in direct contrast to Star Dream, who wanted to erase the hearts of the people trying to control it. Each Robobot that Kirby controlled was different from the last, but whenever Kirby was registered as a pilot in one, the memory data would be linked and carried over, and that continued till the very end. As for whether they'll meet again, I'll leave that up to how passionate the fans are for such a reunion.
1lm9ymn6jpkxm happy face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 09/07/2016 2:25 PM What exactly happened to the Robobot after that? I'm curious to know myself. But now, after three rounds of questions, our Kirby: Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon draws to a close. Many thanks to everyone who stuck with us this far!
3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 09/07/2016 2:26 PM A big thank you from me as well, and I do hope we'll meet again some time!

1lm9ymn6jpkxm like face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 12/02/2016 12:10 PM Good to see everyone again! The time has finally come to reveal the winners of the drawing category of the "Kirby: Planet Robobot Drawing and Screenshot Challenge"!

We'll get to revealing the artwork soon, but first, the director of the game, Mr Kumazaki, would like to say something!

3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/02/2016 12:12 PM Hello everyone, Shinya Kumazaki here. I just want to say that it was a really enjoyable experience to look through all of your wonderful entries. It was obvious how much effort and enthusiasm went into each one. Thank you for sending in your work!
1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 12/02/2016 12:13 PM Then let's begin from the Platinum Choice. Take it away, Mr Kumazaki!
3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/02/2016 12:16 PM Our Platinum Choice goes to… Kowal!

Meta Knight plays a big part in this game, so we received a lot of entries featuring him, but Kowal's work really showcases his speed. It's also very well executed at a difficult angle. That white mask with the black cross cut into it looks particularly cool.
Speaking of Galacta Knight, we came up with him back when we were working on the Kirby Super Star Ultra game because we wanted to create an ultimate enemy for Meta Knight. We gave him an angelic, godlike look to contrast with Meta Knight's bat-like wings. That was a while ago!
Congratulations, Kowal!

WVW69j2c57UDAkxEK7.jpeg
1lm9ymn6jpkxm surprised face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 12/02/2016 12:17 PM Wow, what an intense image. It really makes you want to see how that showdown went!

Next up is our Gold Choice.

3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/02/2016 12:19 PM I'm happy to say that kirby! has earned our Gold Choice!

All of the submissions kirby! made showed a high level of quality with their use of clean lines. And they all featured Labotories having fun, so I could see kirby! has a lot of affection for this character!
Incidentally, Labotories are in charge of researching and developing weapons and such in the Haltmann Works Co.'s laboratory towers. They're the hardworking citizens of another planet, hired by the Haltmann Works Co. and every morning they sing the company song from the bottom of their hearts.
Congratulations, kirby!

WVW69j2c68Mv2yBJWf.jpeg
1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 12/02/2016 12:21 PM Wow, I didn't know they had that much backstory! They always seem so happily busy, don't they? Oh, Kirby's in there too! I hope they all get along.

Well, now it's time for the Silver Choice winners - and there are two of these.

3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/02/2016 12:23 PM The first Silver Choice goes to ななし!

This drawing features some incredible background work - even though it's all in black and white, you can really feel the blue sky and white clouds. The sunlight on the Robobot Armour in Jet Mode is fantastic, too.

WVW69j2c8B43ZTPBwz.jpeg
3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/02/2016 12:26 PM Silver Choice number 2 goes to アンテラ!

アンテラ's work gives us a unique perspective. Lots of entries focused on the final boss and iconic scenes, so to see Circus Kirby reflected in one of the giant balls of Resolution Road was a really nice idea.

Congratulations, ななし and アンテラ!

WVW69j2c8-wv0ak8eL.jpeg
1lm9ymn6jpkxm happy face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 12/02/2016 12:28 PM Both of those entries were drawn so nicely - I especially like Kirby's expressions in them!

Next we have the Bronze Choice, with five artists.

3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/02/2016 12:30 PM The first Bronze Choice winner is yucky♪!

At a glance, this looks like a fairly ordinary picture of Kirby, but look closer and you'll see it seems to be from the perspective of the Robobot Armour. Could this be one of the last pieces of data left in the Robobot Armour's fading memory banks as it floats in space after everything is over? If you think about it like that, it brings a tear to your eye... Just heartbreaking!

WVW69j2c-FEus YCWQ.jpeg
3d0lao00u0xeu surprised face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/02/2016 12:32 PM Our second Bronze Choice goes to てるや!

This is a particularly dynamic Robobot Armour, and what puts it over the top is the screen-shattering punch! It also sparked my imagination - is the Robobot Armour punching the camera itself, or maybe the monitor of an enemy robot?

WVW69j2c-kYToAl87h.jpeg
3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/02/2016 12:34 PM Our third Bronze Choice goes to key!

This might look like a normal picture of Mirror Kirby, but it's actually showing off the old and new hat designs, which I thought was a unique touch. About that hat design - in older titles, due to issues with things like storage capacity, we often had to use the same hat design for multiple Copy Abilities, only changing the color. So the original Mirror hat was a color variation of the Beam hat. But when we brought it back for this game after a long absence, we gave it a big makeover to make it more unique and easier to differentiate.

WVW69j2c JMzeWFvoJ.jpeg
3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/02/2016 12:37 PM The fourth Bronze Prize goes to rH!

This is Dark Matter's true form, that you only get to glimpse for an instant in this game. This was a submission from outside Japan but the artist's use of Japanese characters really draws the eye. You can tell that rH is a real fan of the character.

WVW69j2dAB0Hx2IAl3.jpeg
3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/02/2016 12:38 PM Our fifth Bronze Choice goes to Shira!

These Dedede Clones have such rich expressions. Their faces really give you a sense that they were formed from pure innocent destructiveness extracted from King Dedede's heart.

Congratulations, yucky♪, てるや, key, rH and Shira!

WVW69j2dAgoOYCP1P2.jpeg
1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 12/02/2016 12:40 PM Right, last up in the drawing category is a set of special awards we're calling the Secret Kumazaki Faves! We have three to give out.

Mr Kumazaki, if you'll do the honors?

3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/02/2016 12:42 PM I chose these entries based on ideas that made me go "Wow!"

The first Secret Kumazaki Fave goes to Lady!

Lady's picture really captures the goings-on "behind the scenes" of the game! After the Haltmann Works Co. destroys King Dedede's castle, the repair works get underway in this refreshing picture. And King Dedede has even taken off his crown! I never expected someone to try depicting that... Together with his clothes, it all makes for a very original image. As for his true hairstyle, maybe you'll get to see that one day...

WVW69j2dBqMwyZAQg9.jpeg
3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/02/2016 12:44 PM Secret Kumazaki Fave number 2 goes to クリームロール!

All of クリームロール's entries were very technically accomplished, but this was the one where I felt the concept really shone through.
The pixel art in the center seems to evoke a simpler time when Meta Knight was still himself. And the lines and dots at the bottom of the image are actually a message in Morse code!
It says S, O... Ah, but I shouldn't spoil the fun. I'm sure you can work it out for yourselves!
There are plenty of fun little things like this hidden in Planet Robobot as well, so if you want, you can go back and try to find them all.

WVW69j2dCYAYA88S4o.jpeg
3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/02/2016 12:47 PM The final Secret Kumazaki Fave goes to ラリアット!

ラリアット's entry shows Meta Knight, ready for battle, reflected in Dark Matter's sword, and it's a really fantastic image. The heavy use of black gives it a chic look, and the portrayal of the characters is very nicely done.
Incidentally, you may have noticed that in this game, Dark Matter's sword shines with a rainbow light. This light is materialized from Dark Matter's memories of the Rainbow Sword that he faced in the Kirby's Dream Land 2 game. Those memories must have been included in the original data used to create the clone.
Just like how in the Kirby: Triple Deluxe game, King Dedede faced Dark Meta Knight for the first time ever, in this game Meta Knight faces off against a version of Dark Matter for the first time.
So Dark Matter must have sensed that F21Meta Knight's powers were truly formidable, and materialized the power of the Rainbow Sword to counter him. Seeing two expert swordsmen face off against each other is always a thrilling experience!

Congratulations, Lady, クリームロール and ラリアット!

WVW69j2dDSEW2f9rys.jpeg
1lm9ymn6jpkxm happy face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 12/02/2016 12:49 PM And that's the end of the drawing category of our "Kirby: Planet Robobot Drawing and Screenshot Challenge". We'd like to thank everyone who entered!

Don't forget, though, we still have the screenshot category of the contest to go! We received a lot of entries worldwide for this contest, so it'll take us some time to select our favorites. We know a lot of people are excited, but please wait a little longer for the results!

Hi everyone! Today's the day we announce our favorites of the screenshot category in the "Kirby: Planet Robobot Drawing and Screenshot Challenge"! To begin, let's hear from the game's director, Mr. Kumazaki.

3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/20/2016 10:51 AM Hi there - Shinya Kumazaki here. In the drawing category of this event we saw lots of creations from many wonderful artists, but the screenshot category was something we came up with to let even more people with good ideas take part. Thanks so much to everyone for your submissions!
1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 12/20/2016 10:52 AM Let's start things off with the Platinum Choice. Back to you, Mr Kumazaki!
3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/20/2016 10:54 AM The Platinum Choice goes to...takuya!

I found myself laughing as soon as I looked at this shot. The idea of using the blocks in one of the secret HAL Rooms to spell something out - wow! There were a few submissions that used this idea, but takuya's was the first. The timing of Kirby's pose is great, too. I can almost hear him shouting "HA!"

By the way, in recent titles, the bellow you hear when Kirby hits full volume using the Mike ability is voiced be me. Well, when I say "recent", I mean ever since Kirby Super Star Ultra, eight years ago. Time really flies, doesn't it? Ah...that takes me back!

Congratulations, takuya!

WVW69j5m-LcOY z1iY.jpeg
1lm9ymn6jpkxm surprised face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 12/20/2016 10:55 AM Kirby's vocals sure pack a punch! Looking at this screenshot kind of makes me feel like I'm in the audience at Kirby's show.

Anyway, on to the Gold Choice!

3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/20/2016 10:56 AM The Gold Choice goes to キュービィ!

Using a gaggle of Bronto Burts clustered around Kirby to create the image of a UFO floating in the moonlight is quite a feat! Even the shadow is shaped like a UFO. And did you spot it…? There's a bona fide unidentified flying object in the background of the shot. What attention to detail! That comet only appears at specific time, so it's what you might call a genuine hidden feature.

Congratulations, キュービィ!

WVW69j5m--8fI7SBlM.jpeg
1lm9ymn6jpkxm happy face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 12/20/2016 10:58 AM That one's a great idea, too! It must have been really difficult to get the timing just right.

Now on to the Silver Choices. There are two of these.

3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/20/2016 10:59 AM The first Silver Choice goes to GreyFox!

There were a few snowman-related ideas, but the placement of the dejected-looking head off to the side in this one is really comical.

By the way, recent Kirby games seem to have a thing about snowman-related mechanics. This is the third game to have them. Did you notice?

Well done, GreyFox!

WVW69j5nANA3n7R0KU.jpeg
3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/20/2016 11:00 AM The second Silver Choice goes to Enik!

This scene really makes it look like the Helper system from Kirby Super Star has been resurrected, with Kirby taking on Kracko, assisted by Waddle Doo. I mean, that's not actually what's happening here…but it sure looks like two-player action, and it sure looks fun!

Good job GreyFox and Enik!

WVW69j5nAgI9mAN71s.jpeg
1lm9ymn6jpkxm happy face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 12/20/2016 11:01 AM These are both the kind of ideas that make you want to try them out for yourself, aren't they?

OK then - the Bronze Choices are next. We have five of these.

3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/20/2016 11:05 AM The first Bronze Choice goes to Treat!

What fabulous skill, balancing on two balls at once! Timing the shot to capture that dynamic transformation was a good idea, don't you think? I also really like the way the composition of this screenshot makes the most of the 3D nature of the stage.

WVW69j5nCOwayJQBoq.jpeg
3d0lao00u0xeu surprised face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/20/2016 11:06 AM The second Bronze Choice goes to nao.com.

Wow, it looks like Kirby is using the whip to peel away the corner of that painting in order to reveal its secrets! Another triumph of imagination, this one!

WVW69j5nCkgYGJRKMZ.jpeg
3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/20/2016 11:07 AM The third Bronze Prize goes to パステル!

Wha-?! It looks like the Robobot Armor is rolling towards Grizzo! Maybe he's playing Robobot soccer with Waddle Dee? Capturing the armor upside down like this makes for quite an iconic shot.

WVW69j5nC4wYSZaIn8.jpeg
3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/20/2016 11:08 AM The fourth Bronze Choice goes to Alan!

This one really made me chuckle. In it, we see the dozing Meta Knight, about to realize that he has completely missed his train! This snapshot of Meta Knight's secret shame is pretty unique.

WVW69j5nDNETr2GvPR.jpeg
3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/20/2016 11:11 AM The fifth Bronze Choice goes to カズキ!

We had a lot of submissions using the train seats, but this one is pretty spectacular. It looks like Kirby has made everyone jump out of their seats by bursting into raucous song in the middle of their commute! I really like the way it tells a story.

Well done to Treat, nao.com, パステル, Alan and カズキ!

WVW69j5nD kc2mBW9w.jpeg
1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 12/20/2016 11:12 AM You guys are no slouches at capturing cool scenes! OK, then, now it's time for the Secret Kumazaki Faves! There are three of these.
3d0lao00u0xeu like face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/20/2016 11:13 AM Right! The first Secret Kumazaki Fave goes to ブラウン!

Sorry to all of you that don't read Japanese - this one's kind of a Japanese joke! By taking the screenshot midway through Haltmann's line, ブラウン has made it look like Haltmann is saying "ヤバ" ("Yikes!") instead of "ヤバン" ("Savages!"). Maybe in this screenshot's version of reality, Haltmann got his backside stuck in the chair or something? It's true that he does scoot around everywhere in that chair without doing much getting up and walking, so perhaps he really is stuck in it!

WVW69j5nE34oDpqs O.jpeg
3d0lao00u0xeu surprised face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/20/2016 11:15 AM The second Secret Kumazaki Fave goes to たる!

M-Mario? Punching a hole in the ceiling?! This screenshot really shows that Mario is not to be messed with! I don't think even the great Kirby could withstand such an attack!

WVW69j5nFVYOaIL2bH.jpeg
3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/20/2016 11:16 AM The third and final Secret Kumazaki Fave goes to ロヘイ!

This screenshot seems to depict the extraordinary meeting of the Lor Starcutter with…itself! This craft is capable of traversing space and time, so a meeting of two Lor Starcutters from different times is certainly possible. Wow, wouldn't it be cool if that really happened?

I wonder - the Lor Starcutter that can be seen when Galacta Knight performs this attack...what time is it from? And, if there is someone inside it, who are they, and where are they going? Presumably, when the rift opens and we can see them, they can see into our world, too! Ooh, it really sets the imagination racing, doesn't it!

Congratulations ブラウン, たる and ロヘイ!

WVW69j5nFssq4E4oIu.jpeg
1lm9ymn6jpkxm normal face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 12/20/2016 11:17 AM Well then, that concludes the awards for both categories of the "Kirby: Planet Robobot Drawing and Screenshot Challenge"!

So, Mr Kumazaki, how did you enjoy the event?

3d0lao00u0xeu happy face.png クマザキ (Shinya Kumazaki) 12/20/2016 11:18 AM I enjoyed selecting the screenshots as much, if not more, than selecting the drawings - but it was all great fun! This event proved to me how much people are enjoying the game, and that makes me really happy. Thanks so much for participating. I'll see you all again soon!
1lm9ymn6jpkxm like face.png イシダ (Satoshi Ishida) 12/20/2016 11:20 AM Thank you, everyone!

Wispy-Woods Land

Wispy-Woods Land is a Pinball Land featured in Kirby's Pinball Land. Its boss is Wispy-Woods.

Boss Stage

Wispy-Woods is the boss of Wispy-Woods Land. He can attack by dropping Apples, Gordows, or blowing Air Pellets. Apples act as barriers; destroying one awards 1600. Gordos can immobilize one of the flippers if it hits one, but they can be bounced away if Kirby hits it instead; hitting one awards 240 points. Air Pellets simply push Kirby downward, and are only aimed straight into the drain. Hitting Wispy-Woods awards 5000 points, and hitting him nine times will defeat him, with the last hit awarding 50000 points instead of 5000. If Kirby touches the star-shaped key dropped by Wispy-Woods, Kirby will ride his Warp Star back to the Warp Screen, and the Warp Star to Wispy-Woods Land will be replaced by a ball that has the letters E-X-T-R-A flashing on it; Wispy-Woods Land will be inaccessible until either King Dedede is defeated or the player gets a Game Over. If Kirby falls down the drain without defeating Wispy-Woods, he will be sent to the Top Stage and Wispy-Woods's health will be replenished. If Kirby falls down the drain before collecting the key, he will be sent to the Top Stage, but Wispy-Woods will still be defeated upon returning to the Boss Stage.

Top Stage

Slippy

Slippy is located in the top of the Top Stage. He stands guard of one of four items:

The first three items appear and disappear every five seconds, always in the order of Apple, Candy, Maxim Tomato; if Pinball Kirby destroys the item, the order will start again from Apple. To make the Warp Star appear, destroy all three of the Cappies. The Warp Star will replace Slippy's item for 20 seconds. If Pinball Kirby doesn't touch the Warp Star, it will be replaced by an Apple and the item cycle repeats.

Slippy always appears on the side of the stage that Pinball Kirby is on, hopping over his item and changing places when Pinball Kirby changes sides. If Pinball Kirby makes it up to the top lane, Slippy will try to jump over him; if Pinball Kirby successfully makes it through, he will receive a bonus based on the item. Hitting Slippy awards 3000 points.

Twister

The Twisters are located near the top of the Top Stage, one at each corner, each balancing on a figure of Kirby. Whenever Pinball Kirby passes by a Twister, it begins spinning, rapidly awarding 100 points while it is spinning.

Bounder

The Bounders are located at the sides of the Top Stage, one on each side. The Bounders can move up and down the wall, possibly blocking Pinball Kirby from making a shot into the top lane. Hitting a Bounder awards 480 points.

Cappy

The Cappies are located in the middle of the Top Stage; there are three of them, one on each side and one in the middle. Hitting a Cappy awards 600 points and hitting a capless Cappy awards 1200 points; if a capless Cappy is not hit after a period of time, it will disappear and get a new cap. If the player destroys all three of the Cappies, the Warp Star will appear in place of Slippy's normal items.

When all three Cappies are destroyed, one capless Cappy will come out of one of the three locations, similarly to whack-a-mole, and hitting it awards 1800 points.

Middle Stage

Slot Lane

The Slot Lane is located at the top of the Middle Stage. The Slot Lane is a curved lane with the letters S L O T in it. When Pinball Kirby passes through the Slot Lane, the Slot Machine located below the Dancing Kirby will activate

Dancing Kirby

The Dancing Kirby is located near the top of the Middle Stage, right below the Slot Lane. Hitting the Dancing Kirby's underside will cause a Slot Machine slot to change, depending on Dancing Kirby's pose. If all three slots are Kirby, the Dancing Kirby will raise his arms over his head; this also awards Bonus Points. If Pinball Kirby is shot to be above Dancing Kirby, Dancing Kirby will grab it, swallow it, and then spit it out to the Top Stage.

Slot Machine

The Slot Machine is located in the middle of the Middle Stage. When Pinball Kirby passes through the Slot Lane, the Slot Machine activates. One of four pictures will appear in the slots, and getting three of the same image gives a payoff:

  • Three Kirbys causes Dancing Kirby raise his hands over his head; this also awards Bonus Points. If Pinball Kirby is shot to be above Dancing Kirby, Dancing Kirby will grab it, swallow it, and then spit it out to the Top Stage.
  • Three Warp Stars causes the UFO to appear, with a Warp Star trailing behind it, from one of the holes in the top corners. Hitting the UFO defeats it, awarding points, and touching the Warp Star causes Kirby to fly to the Wispy-Woods Bonus Game.
  • Three Maxim Tomatoes causes the UFO to appear, with a Maxim Tomato trailing behind it, from one of the holes in the top corners. Hitting the UFO defeats it, awarding points, and hitting the Maxim Tomato activates the Middle Stage Drain Stopper.
  • Three Waddle Doos causes Drain Stoppers to disappear.
  • Three different slots, none of which are Waddle Doo, causes the UFO to appear from one of the holes in the top corners. Hitting the UFO defeats it, awarding points; the amount of points awarded for defeating a UFO is random, either being 1500 points, 2000 points, or 3000 points. The hole it emerges from is not random, always coming out from the hole it had entered most recently.

If one of the slots is blinking, the player can change its picture by hitting the Dancing Kirby's underside.

Bottom Stage

Kaboo

The Kaboos are located at the top of the Bottom Stage; there are six of them, three on each corner. Destroying a Kaboo awards 360 points. Destroying all six Kaboos will cause the Big Kaboo to disappear, leaving the Roulette Hole in its place; this will also award Bonus Points. Hitting any destroyed Kaboos awards 180 points.

Mummy Ball

The Mummy Ball is located near the top of the Bottom Stage. It moves in a curved path over "WARP STAR." Hitting it awards 360 points and causes one of the letters in "WARP STAR" to light up. When all of the letters are illuminated, the Mummy Ball is replaced by the Warp Star; this will also award Bonus Multipliers. Touching the Warp Star leads back to the Warp Screen.

Big Kaboo

The Big Kaboo is located in the middle of the Bottom Stage. Hitting it awards 480 points. If all six Kaboos are destroyed, the Big Kaboo disappears, leaving the Roulette Hole in his place. If Pinball Kirby falls into the Roulette Hole, the player can press A to fire him out in the direction the arrow is pointing.

Kirby Triplets

The Kirby Triplets are located at the bottom of the Bottom Stage. Each Kirby, when rolled over, will change its expression. When all three Kirbys are happy, a Drain Stopper will appear at the bottom of the Bottom Stage; when all three Kirbys are deflated, however, the Drain Stopper will disappear.

Miscellaneous

Gordow

Gordows are located near the middle of the Middle Stage and near the top of the Bottom Stage. They act as standard bumpers and award 240 points for hitting them. Gordows in the Middle Stage will recede into the stage and cannot be interacted with whenever a UFO passes by.

Rollover Switch

Rollover Switches are located in the inlanes in each stage. By passing over a Rollover Switch, an Outlane Stopper appears in the outlane on the opposite side of the stage. Passing over a Rollover Switch awards 10 points, 20 points, or 40 points for the Bottom Stage, Middle Stage, and Top Stage respectively.

Outlane Stopper

Outlane Stoppers appear when Pinball Kirby passes over a Rollover Switch. They appear in the outlane opposite to the Rollover Switch, and prevent Pinball Kirby from passing through the outlane; if Pinball Kirby falls into the outlane with an Outlane Stopper, he is bumped back into the stage and the Outlane Stopper disappears. Outlane Stoppers will also disappear if left alone for 15 seconds, blinking when only three seconds remain. Hitting an Outlane Stopper awards 100 points, 200 points, or 400 points for the Bottom Stage, Middle Stage, and Top Stage respectively.

If there is no Outlane Stopper, Pinball Kirby will pass through the outlane and fall to the stage below (or the Springboard in the case of the Bottom Stage). Passing through an outlane awards 200 points, 400 points, or 800 points for the Bottom Stage, Middle Stage, and Top Stage respectively.

Drain Stopper

Drain Stoppers appear in the Top Stage and Middle Stage when Pinball Kirby hits a Maxim Tomato; it appears in the Bottom Stage when all three Kirby Triplets are happy. The Drain Stopper prevents Pinball Kirby from falling through the middle of the stage between the flippers. However, Pinball Kirby can still fall through if one of the flippers are up. The Drain Stopper lasts for 20 seconds, unless it is replenished, instead of disappearing after preventing Pinball Kirby from falling through once.

Bonus Game

The Wispy-Woods Bonus Game features three rows of blocks near the top of the screen, blocking access to an enemy or item. In the span of 60 seconds, and with two Pinball Kirbys, the goal is to break as many blocks as possible and hit the target that moves back and forth at the very top. The first target is Waddle Dee, which awards 5000 points; the second target is Broom Hatter, which awards 10000 points; all subsequent targets are 1UPs, which award extra lives. If blocks are destroyed in a way to create a 2-block wide column, the target will fall through it upon reaching that location. Each block hit awards more points than the last until it resets, which occurs after every twelve blocks:

Kracko Land

Kracko Land is a Pinball Land featured in Kirby's Pinball Land. Its boss is Kracko.

Boss Stage

Kracko is the boss of Kracko Land. Kracko initially starts in his Kracko Jr. form. He starts by moving in a lemniscate path three times. Afterward, he will quickly spin the orbs around his eye and home in on Kirby, which he will do four times before repeating the pattern. After being hit four times, he will fly to the center of the stage and transform into Kracko. As Kracko, he can summon Flappers, which home in on Kirby; defeating one awards 2400 points. Kracko also continuously moves back and forth rather slowly. When he is above a flipper, he will stop moving and prepare to shoot a lightning bolt; this lightning bolt can immobilize the flipper if it hits, although it doesn't directly affect Kirby. By hitting Kracko before he fires a lightning bolt, Kracko will cancel the attack and will resume moving before hovering over a flipper again. Hitting Kracko (in both his regular and Jr. form) awards 5000 points, and hitting him nine times will defeat him, with the last hit awarding 50000 points instead of 5000. If Kirby touches the star-shaped key dropped by Kracko, Kirby will ride his Warp Star back to the Warp Screen, and the Warp Star to Kracko Land will be replaced by a ball that has the letters E-X-T-R-A flashing on it; Kracko Land will be inaccessible until either King Dedede is defeated or the player gets a Game Over. If Kirby falls down the drain without defeating Kracko, he will be sent to the Top Stage and Kracko's health will be replenished. If Kirby falls down the drain before collecting the key, he will be sent to the Top Stage, but Kracko will still be defeated upon returning to the Boss Stage.

Unlike the other Boss Stages, this one has walls, so Kirby can't loop from one side of the Boss Stage to the other.

Top Stage

Mister Bright

Mr. Bright is located at the top of the Top Stage. He moves back and forth, starting from the right. Hitting him awards 900 points. When hit three times, he disappears and the Top Stage becomes night; he is replaced with Mr. Shine. When Mr. Bright is out, there are three clouds in the sky, forming a zigzag pattern. Hitting a cloud awards 450 points and causes it to disappear, with another cloud appearing somewhere else to replace it; there are four set locations for the clouds to appear, so when a cloud disappears, a new one appears in the previously empty location.

Mister Shine

Mr. Shine is located at the top left of the Top Stage; he only appears after Mr. Bright is defeated and the Top Stage becomes night. Hitting him awards 1800 points. When hit three times, he disappears, and the Warp Star appears, which takes Pinball Kirby to the boss of this Pinball Land, Kracko. The Warp Star dives downward four times before floating away. When Mr. Shine appears, there are many stars in the sky. Destroying a small star awards 100 points, destroying a medium star awards 200 points, and destroying a big stage awards 300 points. If Pinball Kirby doesn't touch the Warp Star and all of the stars are destroyed, the Top Stage will turn to day again.

Chucky

Chucky is located at the bottom of the Top Stage. He hops from side to side, starting from the left. Hitting Chucky awards 1000 points. Hitting him three times turns him into a Maxim Tomato. Hitting the Maxim Tomato awards 1000 points and activates the Top Stage Drain Stopper. After hitting the Maxim Tomato, Chucky reappears. When the Top Stage becomes night, Chucky is replaced by Hurly.

Hurly

Hurly is located at the bottom of the Top Stage; he only appears after Mr. Bright is defeated and the Top Stage becomes night. He leaps from side to side. Hitting Hurly awards 2000 points. Hitting him three times turns him into a Maxim Tomato. Hitting the Maxim Tomato awards 2000 points and activates the Top Stage Drain Stopper. After hitting the Maxim Tomato, Hurly reappears. When the Top Stage becomes day, Hurly is replaced by Chucky.

Middle Stage

Nimbus

Nimbus is located at the top of the Middle Stage. It moves back and forth. Hitting it awards 800 points. When hit three times, it will turn gray, hover above the Big Kirby, and start to rain, causing the Big Kirby to pull out his umbrella. If Pinball Kirby lands on the umbrella, he will be sent to the Top Stage; this also awards Bonus Points.

Cloudy

The Cloudys are located at the sides of the Middle Stage, one on each side. Hitting a Cloudy awards 300 points and causes an item to come out (if one isn't out already), moving from one Cloudy to the other. The item will be the same until Kirby hits it. The items in order of appearance:

  • Apple: hitting it awards 1600 points.
  • Twizzy: hitting it awards 2400 points.
  • Gordow: hitting it awards 240 points; since it cannot be destroyed, it can be hit multiple times before it reaches the other Cloudy.
  • Maxim Tomato: hitting it awards 100 points and activates the Middle Stage Drain Stopper.
  • Bronto Burt: hitting him awards 3600 points.
  • Warp Star: touching the Warp Star causes Kirby to fly to the Kracko Land Bonus Game.

Big Kirby (with Umbrella)

The Big Kirby is located in the middle of the Middle Stage. Hitting the Big Kirby awards 600 points. After Nimbus is hit three times, or if a Warp Star appears, the Big Kirby will open his umbrella; landing on the Big Kirby's umbrella will send Pinball Kirby to the Top Stage if it is raining or to the Kracko Land Bonus Game if the Warp Star is present.

Bottom Stage

Bumpin' Boo

The Bumpin' Boos are located near the top of the Bottom Stage. Each one moves in a circle around a Gordow. Hitting the left Bumpin' Boo awards 360 points and causes one of the letters in "WARP" to light up; hitting the right Bumpin' Boo awards 360 points and causes one of the letters in "STAR" to light up. When all of the letters are illuminated, the Warp Star appears above the Scarfy; this also awards Bonus Multipliers. Touching the Warp Star leads back to the Warp Screen.

Scarfy

Scarfy is located in the middle of the Bottom Stage. Hitting it awards 480 points and causes one of the letters in "SCARFY" to light up. When all of the letters are illuminated, the Scarfy splits into three Scarfys; this also awards Bonus Points. Hitting one of the Scarfys awards 120 points and replaces it with the pinball. If Kirby hits one of the bottom two Scarfys, the other two Scarfys will bump Kirby away into the slingshot; if Kirby hits the top Scarfy, however, the other two Scarfys will bump Kirby into the Middle Stage.

Kirby Triplets

The Kirby Triplets are located at the bottom of the Bottom Stage. Each Kirby, when rolled over, will change its expression. When all three Kirbys are happy, a Drain Stopper will appear at the bottom of the Bottom Stage; when all three Kirbys are flipped, however, the Drain Stopper will disappear.

Miscellaneous

Gordow

Gordows are located near the top of the Bottom Stage. They act as standard bumpers and award 240 points for hitting them.

Rollover Switch

Bonus Game

The Kracko Land Bonus Game features a Kirby standing on a long cloud platform and various items moving from right to left. In the span of 60 seconds, the goal is to give the Kirby as many items as possible. The items are:

Hitting Kirby with Pinball Kirby or the items awards 500 points. Kirby can only inhale items that are next to him, not overlapping him. Unlike the other Bonus Games, this one doesn't have walls, so Pinball Kirby can loop from one side of the Bonus Game playfield to the other.

Boss Stage

He will eventually pull out a bomb, and then prepare to throw it directly downward at a flipper. The bomb can immobilize the flipper if it hits one, but it can be destroyed if Kirby hits it instead; hitting one awards 360 points. Poppy Brother will switch sides if his bomb is destroyed or if damaged. After being hit three times, he splits into two Poppy Brothers. Each Poppy Brother can be hit three more times before being destroyed. Hitting Poppy Brothers awards 5000 points; nine total hits will defeat them, with the last hit to each awarding an additional 50000 points. If Kirby touches the star-shaped key dropped by Poppy Brothers, Kirby will ride his Warp Star back to the Warp Screen, and the Warp Star to Poppy Brothers' Land will be replaced by a ball that has the letters E-X-T-R-A flashing on it; Poppy Brothers' Land will be inaccessible until either King Dedede is defeated or the player gets a Game Over. If Kirby falls down the drain without defeating Poppy Brothers, he will be sent to the Top Stage and Poppy Brothers' health will be replenished. Shuttle Loop

Shuttle Loop is a technique learned by those with the Wing Copy Ability. This technique is also available to Meta Knight and the other knight bosses in the games.

Wing

Shuttle Loop is a follow-up to Toss. After an enemy or star is tossed into the air, Kirby/Birdon can perform an inside loop maneuver that will defeat the enemy and can damage other enemies, Mid-bosses, or Bosses in its path.

Knights

The way the Knight characters, such as Meta Knight, perform this move is different from Wing. The knights can perform a shuttle loop as a standard move instead of as a follow-up, and after performing the loop, they can glide in the air with their weapons outstretched. This is performed by pressing down, then up, and then the attack button; the move can be ended by landing, stalling, or performing an aerial attack. Meta Knight is the only knight character able to use this in his playable appearances, as Dark Meta Knight performs Blade Burst instead of Shuttle Loop, and none of the other knight characters are playable, only being bosses.

In the Super Smash Bros. series

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Brawl marks the first instance of Meta Knight being able to perform Shuttle Loop, which is his Up Special. The move behaves as it does in the Kirby games, performing an inside loop followed by a glide that can be cancelled by stalling, attacking, or landing.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Shuttle Loop returns as Meta Knight's Up Special. Due to the removal of gliding, Meta Knight instead ends the attack with a second upward thrust.

Trivia

  • Shuttle Loop is named after a type of roller coaster. Despite this, the move has more in common with the inside loop aerobatic maneuver.
    • One of its custom moves, Blade Coaster, also references roller coasters.

Products

The Haltmann Works Company manufactures and builds various different products, which can be seen in each of the stages in the game. Some of their inventions are futuristic, while others are more steampunk.

Star

A Star is a projectile produced by some bosses and mid-bosses. They generally appear after a physical attack that has a heavy impact, of which are called Impact Stars[citation needed], and are substitutes for standard projectiles, such as Poppy Bros. Sr.'s bombs or Bonkers' exploding coconuts.

Games

Kirby's Dream Land

King Dedede is the only boss in the game that uses impact stars, and they are also the only projectile Kirby can use against him. They appear after Dedede swings his hammer on the ground or after he does the Super Dedede Jump. Small stars also fall in one of the rooms in Bubbly Clouds, but they cannot be inhaled.

Kirby's Adventure

Mr. Shine & Mr. Bright are the first boss to use stars in the game; they appear as Mr. Shine's shooting star attack and as Mr. Bright's heat wave attack. The shooting stars gives the Cutter ability, and inhaling the stars fro the heat wave gives Fire. King Dedede uses them again, but this time, his hammer swing in midair will also produce an impact star. Bonkers produces impact stars from his hammer swing as well. Fire Lion produces impact stars whenever he fails to pounce on Kirby.

Kirby's Dream Land 2

Efreeti produces an impact star after charging straight into the wall, and a second star upon landing, as well as producing one after divebombing. Efreeti can also perform an upward diagonal charge before divebombing, in which the ascending charge can produce a star if he hits a wall, however, a star will not appear upon him landing back on the ground. Master Green can jump into the air and throw down a star that explodes on impact or can throw an arcing star while on the ground. Waiu can produce a star after performing a dive kick, which then bounces twice before disappearing; this star is small and cannot be inhaled, instead setting Kirby on fire upon contact.

Sweet Stuff can summon a pair of starfish that can be used to damage her by using Water Gun on them, sending them back at her like normal stars. Mr. Shine & Mr. Bright use stars once again, again in their shooting star and heat wave attacks, although the stars from the heat wave attack now give Burning, since Fire does not appear in this game. King Dedede can once again produce stars by swinging his hammer and performing the Super Dedede Jump, but also has a few new attacks that produce stars: when King Dedede is enraged, he can jump high into the air before performing his face plant, which creates a star on impact, as well as an exploding star that cannot be inhaled that is sent upward. He can also us his inhale, turn around and shoot out a ball of air that explodes, spreading smaller stars that damage Kirby, an exploding star sent upward, and a normal star sent forward that bounces off the wall before disappearing briefly afterward. His hammer can create a normal star that bounces once alongside an exploding star sent upward.
