Kirby and an opponent, wearing samurai styled clothing, have a showdown with each other. The objective is to press a button faster than the other opponent when an exclamation point ("!") appears. If a player presses a button too soon, the match call for a tie/redo, the player receives a foul, and the match starts over again; getting a second foul gives the win to the opponent. In 1P mode, Kirby has to face five opponents in the game. In 2P mode, two players compete against each other for 1-99 matches; the default is 3 matches.
Samurai Kirby replaces Quick Draw from Kirby's Adventure, although it keeps that name in the English version (other languages also use a different name from "Samurai Kirby"). Kirby fights against the same enemies like he does in Samurai Kirby, but this time he only uses the fan as his weapon. Additionally, it can be played multiplayer with up to four players. In single-player, Kirby faces off against the same five opponents as in Kirby Super Star, and their reaction times are mostly the same as before, with some being increased, making it slightly easier.
Samurai Kirby appears as one of the playable sub-games in Merry Magoland. Its single-player is based on the Kirby Super Star version while the multiplayer is based on the Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land revision, which can be played with up to four players. Waddle Doo is replaced with Bandana Waddle Dee, Wheelie is omitted, Chef Kawasaki is now the second opponent, and Magolor is added as the fourth opponent, between King Dedede and Meta Knight. Opponents reaction times will increase if the player retries after failing, and will decrease if the player retries after winning.
This is an unlockable sub-game in Kirby Super Star Ultra unlocked after clearing Meta Knightmare Ultra. This is one of two nostalgic sub-games, the other being Megaton Punch. It is directly ported from the SNES version of Kirby Super Star, and thus does not see any of the enhancements featured in the DS version. The only difference is that there is no two player mode.
Similar to his appearance in Kirby's Adventure, Meta Knight has no eyes visible through his mask, but has his usual face underneath.
When Kirby is hit by an enemy, Kirby has an unlucky fate:
Waddle Doo/Bandana Waddle Dee hits Kirby with a fan.
Wheelie runs Kirby over, leaving tire tracks on his face.
Chef Kawasaki hits Kirby on the head with a frying pan, leaving a burn mark.
King Dedede flattens Kirby with his hammer.
Meta Knight launches Kirby into the air with his blade, leaving a small cut on his face visible after landing.
Magolor rams a miniature version of the Lor Starcutter at Kirby, flattening him.
In the multiplayer version of this sub-game in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, each character can be seen using different weapons, when they win.
Kirby and Bandana Waddle Dee hit everyone with a party popper.
Meta Knight uses a toy hammer to hit everyone down.
King Dedede hits everyone with a paper fan.
In Kirby Super Star, Chef Kawasaki is referred to as Cook Kawasaki and Meta Knight is referred to as Sir Meta Knight.
In Kirby Super Star, when Meta Knight is slashed, Kirby's sword has an odd purple color on the tip. In Kirby Super Star Ultra, the purple color is changed to red, possibly meaning Meta Knight was cut somewhere.
Also, in Kirby Super Star, the post-game results screen contains an image of an inkstone and inkstick being used to write out the results in calligraphy.
The Japanese version of Kirby Super Star has an additional layer of grass in the foreground during duels. It was removed for international versions to add room for translated subtitles announcing the winner. The grass, however, is added back in Kirby Super Star Ultra
In the Korean version of Kirby Super Star Ultra, Kirby and his opponents are censored; Kirby and Meta Knight no longer have topknots and all other characters use their normal Kirby Super Star sprites instead of the designs unique to this sub-game.
