N-Zs walk through the worlds, neither attacking nor avoiding Kirby. You can easily avoid N-Zs by leaping over them.
— Description • Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards Official Strategy Guide (Prima)

N-Zs are common enemies that appear only in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.

Physical Appearance

N-Zs look like dark grey balls with round black eyes, pointy cat-like ears, and white shoes.

Games

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

N-Zs make their only appearance in this game, where they replace Waddle Dees as the most common enemy in the game, since the only Waddle Dee that appears in it is one of Kirby's friends. They are just as simple to defeat as Waddle Dees are in other games. They grant Kirby no Copy Ability when they are inhaled. A bigger version of N-Z can be found on the first stage of Planet Popstar as a mid-boss two rooms before the fight with a Dark Matter-possessed Waddle Dee.

N-Zs can only be found on Popstar, Ripple Star, and, strangely enough, Dark Star. N-Zs can be seen dropping from Dark Matter in Stage 3 of Ripple Star. They are the only enemies that can found on Dark Star other than the final boss, 02. Because of this, it has been suggested that N-Zs (or at least, these particular ones) are created by Dark Matter or have some other strong affiliation with it.

Trivia

  • These enemies take the place of Waddle Dees in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards because the Waddle Dee in the game is Kirby's friend. This is not the case in Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby: Triple Deluxe, however; because the friendly Waddle Dee in those games is differentiated by a bandana, ordinary Waddle Dees still serve as common enemies.
