Mario is the main character from the Mario franchise. He is best known for rescuing the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, Peach, from plots by the Koopa King, Bowser. He appears in the Mario Kirby Masterpiece educational video released in Japan, and is a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. series alongside Kirby.
Games[]
Mario Kirby Masterpiece[]
In Mario Kirby Masterpiece, one story features an adventure featuring Mario characters, with Mario as the main protagonist. Here, he thwarts the plans of the mischievous Wario, his mean-spirited counterpart, who had stolen some treasure (which turns out to actually be school books). The use of the character Wario, as well as the Rabbit Mario power-up, are likely due to the recent release of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins.
Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra[]
Mario, alongside other Mario-series characters Luigi, Toad, Birdo, Peach, and Bowser, appear in Stage 4 of Spring Breeze, Mt. Dedede, where they appear in the left and right sides of the audience in the Dedede Arena. Due to the restrictions of the camera, Peach and Bowser are only barely visible. These same characters appear again in the Megaton Punch audience, as the audience members are reused from the Dedede Arena, with Peach being even less visible and Bowser no longer being visible at all. Kirby can also transform into a golden statue of Mario's likeness with Stone, having Mario give the peace sign.
In Kirby Super Star Ultra, the audience in the Dedede Arena was updated: Mario, Peach, and a Toad appear on the left side of the audience, while Luigi, Toad, and new addition Wario, appear on the right side; Bowser and Birdo are no longer present. The Megaton Punch audience remains the same as it was in Kirby Super Star. The Mario statue appears once again as a Stone transformation, but Mario is instead raising his fist instead of giving the peace sign.
Various treasures in The Great Cave Offensive hail from the Mario series:
- The Phantom Mask (called "Zebra Mask" in Kirby Super Star) resembles the Phanto that debuted in the Super Mario Bros. series in Super Mario Bros. 2.
- The Bucket is from Mario & Wario.
- The Koopa Shell (called "Turtle Shell" in Kirby Super Star) is the shell of the Koopa Troopas that can typically be kicked around.
- The Tire appears to be a reference to the Mario Kart series, where it is called Kart Tire in the Japanese version.
Kirby: Planet Robobot[]
Using Stone, Kirby can once again transform into a gold Mario statue, this time in a pose reminiscent of the Gold Mario Statue in New Super Mario Bros. 2 that appears on the title screen after obtaining at least a million coins (but before maxing out at 9,999,999 coins, where the Gold Mario Statue instead has him flying as Raccoon Mario).
Using amiibo, Kirby can inhale Mario and copy the Fire ability.
In the Super Smash Bros. series[]
In the Super Smash Bros. series, Mario is a starting playable character in every game. He hails from the Super Mario Bros. series as the first playable character of it. He makes use of classic power-ups, such as the Fire Flower to throw fireballs or the Cape Feather to swing a cape in front of him. Starting in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he can also use F.L.U.D.D., a character who made his debut in Super Mario Sunshine for the Nintendo GameCube.
Role in Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary[]
Mario plays a rather prominent role in Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary. In the beginning, a trophy of Mario and Kirby are thrown into the Midair Stadium arena, where they come to life and spar; the player can choose to play as either Mario (by default) or Kirby. After the battle, the victor revives the fallen loser, and the two fighters celebrate and happily wave to the crowd. Suddenly, dark clouds fill the sky and the Halberd appears. It drops many small, dark spheres—Shadow Bugs—into the stadium, which then combine to form several Primids and other members of the Subspace Army. Peach and Zelda, who were watching the match in the crowd, both come to their aid. After the battle, the Ancient Minister appears and drops a giant Subspace Bomb into the stadium. Two R.O.B.s appear and arm the bomb as the Ancient Minister flies back to the retreating Halberd. As Mario runs to stop the bomb, he, Kirby, Peach, and Zelda hear a loud noise behind them. A cannonball is fired at Mario from a cloud of smoke and he is blasted out of the stadium into the sky.
Mario's trophy is later found by Pit in Skyworld; Pit revives Mario, and the two set off together to pursue the Halberd. The Halberd manages to stay out of their reach, but Fox, in his Arwing, flies by in pursuit of it. Mario, along with Pit, head to The Plains to instead pursue the Ancient Minister, who also manages to evade them. Mario and Pit later appear at The Lake Shore, where they cross paths with Link and Yoshi. Depending on which princess Kirby saved from Petey Piranha, the interaction will be different.
If Kirby saved Peach, Bowser will use a Dark Cannon to turn her into a Trophy, after which false Bowser will transform into false Peach to try to attack Mario and Pit, only to be interrupted and defeated by Link and Yoshi; Mario notices the false Peach Trophy disappear and tries to attack Link, after which the four engage in a two versus two battle where Link and Yoshi emerge victorious. King Dedede then appears, driving Wario's Cargo, to which Link notices the Zelda Trophy among Ness and Luigi; King Dedede then snatches Mario's and Pit's Trophies, but Kirby interrupts, frees them using Final Cutter, and revives them by touching their Trophy Stands. The then-revived Pit fires an arrow of light at the Cargo, causing it to be damaged and eventually break down. Mario, Link, Kirby, Pit, and Yoshi then pursue King Dedede.
If Kirby saved Zelda, she will be turned into a Trophy by Bowser, after which false Bowser will transform into false Zelda to try to attack Link and Yoshi, only to be interrupted and defeated by Pit and Mario; Link notices the false Zelda Trophy disappear and tries to attack Mario, after which the four engage in battle where Mario and Pit emerge victorious. King Dedede then appears and Mario notices the Peach Trophy; King Dedede then snatches Link's and Yoshi's Trophies before Kirby frees and revives them. The then-revived Link fires an arrow at the Cargo. Mario, Pit, Kirby, Link, and Yoshi then pursue King Dedede.
Mario and co. eventually reach a cave where the Cargo King Dedede stole was left outside of. After traversing the cave, they find King Dedede's castle. However, once they enter the castle, they find the roof has crumbled (due to Bowser invading the castle earlier), as well as a hole in the wall that's a hidden passage through The Cave. Upon exiting The Cave, Mario confronts Bowser and tries to attack him, but Bowser uses the Trophy of the princess Kirby didn't save in the Midair Stadium as a hostage, prompting Mario to intentionally miss his attack. Pit then fires an arrow at Bowser, who dodges the arrow, causing the Dedede Brooch to fall off the Trophy. Bowser then falls off the cliffside, but lands in his Koopa Clown Car and flies with his kidnapped Trophy to the Halberd.
Mario and co. later appear in The Wilds, once again chasing after the Ancient Minister. They manage to catch up to him, but he drops another Subspace Bomb. Mario and Pit attempt to disarm the bomb by removing the R.O.B.s that are attached to it, but fail as another pair of R.O.B.s pull them away. The Subspace Bomb explodes, engulfing the group of R.O.B.s and a portion of The Wilds, but Mario riding on Yoshi and Kirby on his Warp Star along with Link and Pit, manage to escape from its influence. Mario and co. end up at The Canyon, where commotion is going on due to the Halberd slamming the Great Fox into The Glacial Peak nearby; the Ice Climbers, Ike, Lucas, Marth, and Pokémon Trainer are fending off against the members of the Subspace Army forming from the falling Shadow Bugs, to which Mario and co. come to their aid.
Mario and the others are later joined by the group that infiltrated the Halberd and those that escaped the Isle of the Ancients. Aboard the Halberd, the 25 fighters journey to the Entrance to Subspace. They eventually come across the fallen Master Hand and Tabuu, the latter of uses his Off Waves to turn the fighters into Trophies. Mario's Trophy can be recovered in the first Subspace stage; obtaining his Trophy allows the player to use him in The Great Maze and appear in the final cutscene with all other rescued Trophies. A false Mario also appears in The Great Maze, located through the door between The Cave area and The Wilds area.
