— VS Magolor Soul (Extra Mode) • Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe |
Magolor Soul is a final boss in the Kirby series, debuting in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.
Physical Appearance[]
Magolor Soul's physical form mostly resembles his Final Traitor Form in shape and the overall appearance, but he has been tweaked to look much more terrifying than his colorful story mode counterpart. His body is mainly a very dark teal and his horns are now a dark purplish-gray color, with their tips being black. The gold rings around his horns are now a dark purplish-gray and blend in with his horns. The rings wrapped around his horns are now ivory and have a more menacing look with light purple and lighter ivory spots, and dark teal spikes wrapped around them. The spike-tipped extensions also appear on Magolor's wings, which are now teal and dark teal and have light ivory coverings. Magolor Soul has glowing white eyes instead of red, his gloved hands are dark teal with considerably sharp claws, and the pink runes on his wrists are now small hexagons instead of the larger sun-like runes used by all of his previous forms.
The Master Crown still sits atop Magolor's head, appearing more twisted and ingrained into his form than ever before. The crown itself, now somewhat reminiscent of an eye, is ivory in color and has a pink jewel built into its center like his EX form instead of a green jewel like his normal mode counterpart (which glows light blue when Magolor Soul is using his strongest attacks). It has several jagged spikes jutting out from the top of it resembling the rays of the sun (or possibly deranged eyelashes, going with the eye theme the crown has taken on) instead of the previous misshapen tentacles of his normal mode counterpart. A pair of bull-like horns jut out from both sides of the crown along with another pair of horns coming out from behind them; this second set of horns is much longer than the first set and they are curled at the ends, being light purplish-gray in color. Besides the three claws extending above Magolor Soul's head, four more claws extend underneath him, either resembling a set of jaws or a clawed hand holding him. Magolor Soul keeps the third eye that his normal mode counterpart had, but the pupil and red iris are visible from the beginning of the fight instead of the beginning of the second phase. In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, his appearance stays the same but during his second phase in the True Arena, he loses his two primary white eyes and the third eye becomes a permanent feature while his body emits a malevolent purple glow and an ominous golden aura. The Master Crown's pink jewel also flashes a bright cyan during this phase and the hexagonal runes on his wrists become fainter and now flicker.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[]
After Magolor EX is defeated in Extra Mode, Magolor Soul emerges in his place as the final boss. Magolor Soul has a much more menacing appearance and is more difficult to defeat than any of Magolor's previous forms.
Magolor Soul's fate depends on the mode he is fought in. In Extra Mode, he dissipates, reverting back to Magolor, then the Master Crown shatters and Magolor is banished to the furthest depths of Another Dimension. In The True Arena of Kirby's Return to Dream Land, he simply dissipates into nothing. In The True Arena of Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, he is banished through a dimensional rift, with the Master Crown still in full control of him.
Attacks[]
Like in Story Mode, Magolor Soul immediately resumes the battle by dispelling Kirby's Ultra Sword ability (this does not occur in The True Arena, as the part of the fight against Magolor EX requiring these Super Abilities is skipped). He will then pull open a Black Hole after doing so (both attacks can be skipped if Kirby can dispel Ultra Sword on his own as soon as the camera starts to pan away from him). The black hole (like Magolor EX's black hole) is dark brown in color (purple and white in the remake), distorts and "swirls" reality as it tries to draw Kirby and his friends in much faster than before (the reality warping effect is absent in the remake). The black hole is so strong that even Stone Kirby or Leaf Kirby cannot escape it, and it depletes over half of Kirby's health if he is caught inside it. Magolor Soul can summon the dimensional rifts to summon Deadly Needles at Kirby like in Story Mode, but the spikes themselves now resemble thorny vines and the attack is performed three times in a row instead of just once. Magolor Soul can also shoot a Magolor Cannon which is now brown with white specks instead of fully white like Magolor. In the remake, the beam's color has changed to a ghastly teal blue (just like Magolor Soul's face and other powers) and it goes into a portal like before. However, two pairs of portals transport the beam around the screen in different patterns, a move that he can use from the beginning of the fight; he can also create vertical sets of portals that move left or right across the screen (although this configuration can easily be evaded by flying above the portals). Magolor Soul can still juggle enemies around (one of which will always yield Kirby the Copy Ability he had before acquiring a Super Ability), summon Magical Spheres (now gray instead of purple), shoot a Magolor Cannon (now noticeably larger than the original), draw outlines of shapes in the background to have them fly into the screen, and a Magolor Surge through portals like he did before.
Upon Magolor Soul's health being depleted to about half, he becomes even more powerful. His imitation of the Ultra Sword Super Ability uses twin icy versions of Galaxia to attack instead of the standard swords from before. He'll swing each of them once and then swing both of them towards the middle of the screen, making it almost impossible to dodge if Kirby isn't expecting it.
His new version of Monster Flame has the dragons fly vertically across the screen instead of horizontally. These dragons are now light blue instead of dark blue. The first two will be by themselves always, then two dragons will always fly together on the third pass; all four dragons will always appear near Magolor's hands.
For his Flare Beam-like attack, Magolor Soul gathers energy like he did originally, but also creates a second empty sphere of darkness to roll around as he does. After he tries to ram the player characters from afar in the background, the second sphere will try to do the same.
Magolor's most prominent new attack that he adds to his arsenal mimics the aspects of the Grand Hammer and Snow Bowl abilities. He creates an enormous mallet made out of ice in his hands. He will charge forth towards the foreground and slam it into the middle of the room. Two shockwaves form from both sides and leave sharp icicles along the floor. Larger icicles will appear from overhead and drop down one at a time. The icicles on the floor will eventually disappear, but still leave behind ice that can hamper the movements of the players and leaves them more vulnerable to the Ultra Sword attack that usually follows immediately afterwards (the ice on the floor also goes away with enough time).
The second and last new attack Magolor Soul uses involves him flipping the entire screen upside-down for a short time, similar to the Extra Mode version of the Ice Sphere Doomer. While the screen is upside down, he usually sticks to his portal ramming and Magic Sphere attacks, but he sometimes creates Deadly Needles, making it hard to dodge upside-down. Magolor Soul will eventually revert the screen to normal after several attacks. In Kirby’s Return To Dream Land Deluxe's Extra Mode, Magolor Soul’s boss fight is the same as the original game. However, he juggles enemies faster and also performs his Magolor Surge faster, unlike in the original game where he retained the same speed as Magolor's final form in story mode for both moves.
In The True Arena of Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Magolor Soul's attacks are heavily modified to make them even more dangerous. In his first phase, he can fire two Magolor Cannons at once (which practically takes up the whole screen; the only safe spot is behind Magolor Soul) and his Magolor Surge takes up more of the screen, and is performed four times in a row, with even more speed than in Extra Mode. He can also aim the portals diagonally during this attack. The Deadly Needles he summons sometimes now linger on the ground for a while, limiting Kirby's room to maneuver so he can follow up with a barrage of Magic Spheres; he may also create two horizontal Deadly Needles before trapping Kirby between five more from the celling and floor, or generate Deadly Needles directly underneath Kirby's current location. He will summon two black holes instead of one, each on one side of the arena. When he blasts his Magolor Cannon through a portal, three pairs of portals will open up to fire it in a box shape, with one last portal going through the middle of the box. Instead of drawing one shape to cover the screen with, Magolor Soul will now create three at a time one after another, the second is always two rectangles with a gap in the middle. When juggling enemies, Magolor Soul will throw them as fast as he could in Extra Mode, but will juggle more and bigger enemies.
After depleting his first health bar, Magolor Soul will cough out an apple for Kirby to recover his health and his second phase will begin. His first attack conjures up two sand tornadoes (similar to the Sand ability), which he hurls from the left and right sides of the screen. The tornadoes are similar to Galacta Knight's Ground Twisters, but are much larger in size. The second attack manifests the Mecha cannons, which shoot out massive blue fireballs down in pairs that briefly leave damaging flames behind. The first two land in the center while the second two land near the edges, with the latter two trying to trap Kirby in the center. Magolor Soul follows this up with laser beams down the center of the stage, forcing Kirby to quickly move to the edges to survive; the beams are swept upward, so hovering over them will not be effective. The flames from the previous two fireballs linger while Magolor Soul charges the lasers, and dissipate as soon as they are fired. This means Kirby will have to time his jump; too early and he will land on the still present flames, too late and he will get hit by the lasers. The timing is tight, so it might be easier to simply float over the flames while the lasers are charging.
His previous Dark Super Abilities have been enhanced as well. His Flare Beam attack now features a third sphere, the Monster Flame attack's flames are now sent out in pairs that travel in perpendicular lines (the third set generates four flames crossing at once), the ice hammer attack is performed with the screen flipped, and the Ultra Sword attack is performed faster while the screen is still flipped from the ice hammer attack.

Canonicity[]
Magolor Soul, as well as his Traitor EX Form beforehand, are not canon, as Kirby's Return to Dream Land’s Extra Mode and The True Arena are not canon. However, in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, the opening cutscene of Magolor Epilogue shows Magolor Soul being defeated instead of his Final Traitor Form from Story Mode, implying that Magolor Soul is canon to that mode at least.

Trivia[]
- Necrodeus, Magolor Soul, Wham Bam Jewel, Dark Mind, and Magolor’s second form are the only bosses in the series to have exactly three eyes.
- Also, all of these bosses are seen to have dismembered hands at some point.
- With the exception of Soul Forgo, who is not fought, Magolor Soul is the only Soul boss to not inherit any attack from Drawcia Soul whatsoever.
- Magolor Soul's dark teal color scheme, in contrast to Magolor EX's red color scheme, possibly suggests that Magolor EX's body may have been destroyed by fire after he was defeated and that Magolor Soul is a recreation of the resulting ashes.
- Despite the fact that this is obviously the strongest form Magolor ever attains, Magolor Soul cannot shoot his spherical energy projectiles as quickly as Magolor EX (who immediately preceded him) can.
- Hitting Magolor Soul with an attack while he is trying to ram the player with his Flare Beam attack may cause him to freeze in place until the empty ball of energy flies offscreen, after which the battle resumes as normal. This is most likely a glitch.
- Magolor Soul's battle music is titled "C-R-O-W-N-E-D", referring both to the Master Crown atop his head and the fact that the first letter of all of the game's levels, except Another Dimension, spell the word "CROWNED" in order.
- The theme has a number of Kirby tunes mixed into it. It begins starting with a tune similar to Nightmare's battle theme from Kirby's Adventure, has "Magolor, the Far-Flung Traveler" mixed into the middle, and ends with the Green Greens and "Kirby's Triumphant Return" leitmotifs.
- The French names of the levels spell "PARFAIT," which translates to "perfect" in French. In the Spanish version, the levels spell "CORONAR", which translates to "to crown" in Spanish.
- Magolor Soul can be heard uttering Kirby's name during his death scream. This track is known as "Free...Me...Kirby..." .
- Magolor Soul has an unused death scream that is not present in the Sound Test, or anywhere else in the game. It still remains unused even in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe.
- If the player inhales the enemies that Magolor Soul throws and gets Mix, the outcome will always be the Copy Ability that they had in the Magolor EX fight, assuming they let the Mix roulette run on its own.
- Magolor Soul and Drawcia Soul are the only soul bosses to bear little resemblance to their original forms.
- Magolor Soul is the only Soul boss who appeared in an Extra Mode rather than just The True Arena. Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe even goes as far as to differentiate how he fights in each mode. His Extra Mode fight is unaltered from the original game (aside from him juggling enemies faster and traveling through portals faster) but his fight in The True Arena is made much more difficult, with new attacks and two HP bars.
- Much like Star Dream, Star Dream Soul OS, Void Termina/Void Soul, Void Termina (True Destroyer of Worlds)/Void, and Chaos Elfilis, Magolor Soul gets a unique rest area theme before his fight in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe., known as "INTERNAL STRUGGLE". In the original game, this was not the case due to Magolor Soul sharing the same rest area theme as HR-D3, Lor Starcutter EX, Galacta Knight and Magolor EX, known as "Where the True Enemy Lies".
- When fighting against "true" Magolor Soul, the orb that appears in the middle of the battlefield's background resembles Void Termina's Final Core and Void Soul.
- In the fight against Magolor Soul in The True Arena in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Magolor's voice can be heard during the second phase, calling Kirby for help by repeating カービィ (Kirby) and タスケテ (help me). It can be assumed that Magolor may still have some control over the Master Crown in Extra Mode and the first phase in The True Arena, but completely lost it when entering the second phase.
- This is further supported when Magolor Soul loses the white "Magolor" eyes at the start of the second phase and the big "Zero" eye remains, which possibly indicates that the Crown is now fully in control of Magolor.
- The apple that is spat out of Magolor Soul's mouth just before the second phase is possibly a last gift from Magolor to help Kirby to defeat his now completely controlled body.
- Once Magolor Soul is defeated, instead of reverting back to his original look like he did in Extra Mode, he is dragged into Another Dimension with the Master Crown still in full control. This is considered as the "bad ending" of the game, as Magolor is exiled into Another Dimension, with his mind gone and himself trapped in the control of the Crown as a consequence of his misdeeds and betraying Kirby.
- According to Shinya Kumazaki, it was planned to make the players get this bad ending if they did not collect all 120 Energy Spheres in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, however, this idea was eventually scrapped, as they decided that Magolor being freed from the control and misdeeds is a necessary part of the main storyline.[1]
- The portal Magolor Soul was dragged into uses the "exit portal" coloration, so it could mean the crown and Magolor were sent out of Another Dimension and into somewhere else unknown.
