The title scene as it appears in the pilot

The Kirby of the Stars ((星のカービィ, Hoshi no Kābī) Pilot is an un-aired "prototype" of the anime. It is not narrated, and has no voice acting. It was created in 2000 and licensed under Hal Laboratory and Nintendo.

History

To celebrate the release of Kirby Air Ride in Japan, a special Kirby DVD was released with a popular video gaming magazine. It had clips from episodes and different games, and also a short 'pilot anime' that seems to be an early form of the show. No information was given about it, and it was not narrated with any voice acting. It was done in a mix of 3D computer graphics and 2D animation, much like the current series.

The Plot

The story begins where Kirby is sleeping on the warp star in outer space and his warp star caughts on fire and he lands on Dreamland. The next morning, an unamed girl who looks like Tiff sees Kirby in the ground and he comes out of the ground. Kirby and the girl became friends and they both started flying in the sky and they were next to a castle.

A fat blue penguin named King Dedede sees the girl with Kirby. He decides to ruin Kirby's day. 1st: Kinge Dedede tryed to shoot Kirby with a machine gun, but the machine gun exploded on Dedede. 2nd: Kirby and the girl were on a strange green mountain and Dedede trys to pound Kirby on the ground with a sharp wood but the 2 went away and Dedede instead hits the mountain that was actualy a real dinosaur. 3rd: King Deded sees Kirby taking a nap with the girl at the beach and Dedede trys to hit Kirby with his hammer, but the waves from the ocean wash Dedede down. 4th: Dedede sees Kirby having a picnic with the girl and Dedede is using alot of stuff in his TNT and sees if he can explode it on Kirby, but the Tnt exploded on Dedede and he landed right next to Kirby and Tiff. Kirby arrives next to Dedede and offers him a hot dog on a fork and Dedede takes the hot dog. Kirby goes back to the girl and King Dedede starts crying, because his plains have failed.

All of the sudden a huge clound of darkness appears and 5 smoke balls unleashes monsters. The 1st smoke ball opens up blue light and Captain Stitch comes out. The 2nd smoke ball opens up yellow light and Meta Knight comes out holding a sword and he is using his bat wings. The 3rd smoke ball opens up purple light and Ice Dragon comes out and he is small instead of large. The 4th smoke ball opens up green light and Dark Matter comes out. The 5th smoke ball opens up red light and Master Green comes out.

Kirby beings to inhale the bad guys. He inhales Captain Stitch and he spits him out and he hits Meta Knight and the 2 bad guys fall on the ground. Kirby eats Ice Dragon and copies his ability and shoots his ice breath and Dark Matter frezzes into ice and he falls on the ground. Kirby eats Master Green and copies his ability and he electrocutes Blocky, Efrite, Mr. P. Umpkin, Sweet Stuff, and Haboki.

Kirby, King Dedede, and Tiff all charge at something, until a yellow beam catches them and an enemy who appears to be Nightmare captures the Trio. Kirby wakes up and shows it was a nightmare. He was on his warp star in his blanket and he sweats and was safe. He was still in outer space.

Spoiler alert: Plot-specific details are within this box
It first shows Kirby in space, sleeping on his Warp Star which then crashes down onto a planet (presumably Pop Star). A young, yellow skinned girl in a tiara who resembles Tiff is the first to find him. The two soon become friends, but Dedede, likely to be the princess' angry father, also appears. He tries to get rid of Kirby with a series of weapons and pranks, but each plot fails or backfires, leaving Kirby unharmed. First, he tries to shoot them down with a machine gun, but it blows up in his face. Secondly, He tries to impale them on a log, but Kirby and the girl walk away, causing Dedede to stick the log in the ground, which is actually a giant Alligator. Thirdly, Dedede tries to hit them with his hammer, but he gets washed away by the tide. Finally, he creates a bomb, but it explodes, sending him onto Kirby and the girl's picnic blanket. Kirby then gives him a hot dog on a fork, completely unaware of what was going on, causing Dedede to start crying.

At the end, dark clouds appear along with animated versions of many Kirby game enemies, such as Dark Matter, Ice Dragon and Meta Knight. But Kirby quickly goes into battle, inhaling them to gain their powers. Though he doesn't gain his signature hats as with the current anime, he does gain their abilities. This is what happens in games like the original Kirby's Adventure, Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby's Dream Land 3, and Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Kirby defeats them all, and he, Dedede, and the girl were seen charging to something. All of a sudden, a looming figure similar to Nightmare appears and attacks the trio with an electric shock. Kirby wakes up on his Warp Star, only to find that his adventure was only a dream.

Character Differences

The pilot of Kirby of the Stars has several differences between itself and the anime you would see on TV. Some examples may just be the appearances of the characters themselves.

Kirby's appearance is similar to his simple appearance in games like Kirby's Adventure and Kirby's Dream Land 2. However, there is not that much of a difference. He appears to be able to float, unlike in the anime (Kirby rarely uses his floating ability). He also still has a childish psyche. Also, when Kirby copies an enemy's ability, he does not gain a hat, and doesn't appear to have to swallow, either. Furthermore, when Kirby wakes up with a scream, it was the freaked pose, because one eye gets smaller, then the other eye does, and the eye that got small changes back to normal. This is once used in Kirby's Adventure.

King Dedede's design is much more similar to Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Rather than his usual white bobble, which is seen in the regular anime and most Kirby games, he has a yellow crown on top of his hat. He does not wear his gloves, either. Most of his scheming is reminiscent of Wile E. Coyote, pulling simple pranks (and backfiring) rather than summoning a Demon Beast to do away with Kirby.

The female character in the pilot has no name, but she appears to be an early concept design for Tiff. She appears to be able to fly, which is rather strange. Her crown suggests that she may be a princess, or the daughter of King Dedede.

Meta Knight seems to be an enemy to Kirby, unlike in the anime (he is seen to be a mentor). The sword he uses is not the Galaxia of the anime-- it has no spikes on the side. It looks much more similar to Master, the sword of Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. This is also the only time Meta Knight ever uses his wings in the anime.
