Get as far as you can as fast as you can. Hold ← on the + Control Pad and the A Button to put your Kirby-mobile in gear, then shake your Game Boy Color system to get the engine going. There's a cliff just 100 meters away — don't drive off of it!
— Instruction manual description • Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble

Kirby's Chicken Race is a sub-game from Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble.

Game[]

In Kirby's Chicken Race, Kirby must race a chicken, as the name suggests. When the game starts, Kirby is in a car, and an egg will be sitting at the starting line. The player will have five seconds to hold the left and the A button, then rapidly shake the Game Boy. This will charge up power in Kirby's car. Once five seconds are up, the egg will hatch into a chicken (which bears a striking resemblance to Tookey) and the player will no longer be able to charge.

When the race officially begins, the chicken will run ahead and Kirby, who is unable to control how fast he moves and cannot brake, will jet ahead. Kirby will earn points as he passes signs with numbers on them, similar to the goal game in Dyna Blade. The more charge the player puts into the car, the farther Kirby will zoom, and the more points he'll gain.

There is a cliff just beyond 99m. The chicken will stop just before the cliff. The player must be careful how much charge is put into Kirby's car; not passing the chicken will force Kirby to try again, as will driving off the cliff. If Kirby fails three times, the game will end with him being the loser.

Like all the sub-games in Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble, Kirby's Chicken Race can only be played if Kirby obtains the Bonus Star and clears the stage in which he found it. It becomes available to play anytime if Kirby collects every Red Star in Extra Mode.

Trivia[]

  • If Kirby goes over the cliff, he wears a bandage when he tries again. If he moves fast enough though, the bandage flies off him.
  • Along with his Car Metamortex transformation, this is one of the few times Kirby interacts with an automobile.
  • Kirby's Chicken Race is inspired by chicken, a game in which two players drive toward each other in automobiles. The goal is to intimidate the other player into swerving at the last minute to avoid danger. Kirby and his opponent compete to stop as close to the cliff edge as possible, simulating this effect. The name chicken is taken literally, as Kirby's opponent is a chicken.
