Kirby's Dream Course was the first game in the Kirby series to include a versus mode. When two players faced off against the other, Player Two got to control a yellow Kirby! The development team nicknamed this character "Keeby," a play on words for the Japanese word for "yellow."

Keeby is a member of the Kirby species that appears in the Kirby series, debuting in Kirby's Dream Course.

General Information

Keeby is identical to Kirby in every way except color. Keeby is simply a yellow Kirby.

In Kirby's Dream Course, the second player plays as Keeby in multiplayer games, and he has identical abilities to Kirby. As he is not seen outside of the 2-Player Game of Kirby's Dream Course (cameos aside), he is a somewhat obscure character in the Kirby series. Though not Keeby exactly, his color scheme is used as an alternate palette swap for Kirby in the Super Smash Bros. series, which is noted in Super Smash Bros.[1] In Kirby's Dream Buffet, the yellow color is referred to as "Keeby Yellow," referencing Keeby; other colors are given similar references to their origins where applicable.

Yellow Kirby, a Kirby that looks very similar to Keeby, has appeared in Kirby series main games, sub-games, and spin-offs. Though they share the same color palette, they are not confirmed to be the same character.

Etymology

Keeby's name is a portmanteau of the Japanese word for yellow, きいろい/黄色い (Kiiroi); and Kirby, カービィ (Kābyi).

Trivia

  • Keeby's coloration may be a reference to the fact that Shigeru Miyamoto initially thought Kirby was yellow, although HAL Laboratory settled on Masahiro Sakurai's preference of pink.
  • Despite having orange feet in artwork, his in-game sprites in Kirby's Dream Course have dark yellow feet; this is likely due to color limitations. This was fixed in Kirby's Dream Buffet.
  • A 2024 McDonald's Happy Meal set refers to a yellow Kirby plush as Keeby; it is based on his Kirby's Dream Buffet appearance.[2]
