A great way to cool down hot-headed enemies and then send them flying as a block of ice with a kick! You can also turn on a dime with skate dash or freeze your friends' weapons! You can even give a stone a slippery path for a bit of curling!
— Flavor Text • Kirby Star Allies

Ice is a Copy Ability in the Kirby series, debuting in Kirby's Adventure.

Games

Kirby's Adventure, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land

Ice focuses on exhaling ice breath to deal damage. Enemies frozen by his breath will transform into ice blocks, which can be kicked to damage other enemies. Ice is obtained from the Pengy enemy.

In Kirby's Adventure, Ice changes Kirby to appear white with blue feet, which also occurs with the similar Copy Ability Freeze.

Starting in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Kirby wears a crown of ice crystals with a yellow circlet and orange gem and makes Kirby blue.

Move Controls Description Element
Ice Breath B Kirby exhales icy breath that ignores terrain for as long as the button is held. Any enemy defeated by Kirby's breath will transform into a block of ice. In Kirby's Adventure, Ice Breath travels 3 tiles and can hit objects slightly below the area directly in front of Kirby; enemies frozen from Ice Breath freeze instantaneously. In Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Ice Breath travels 4 tiles and can hit objects slightly above the area directly in front of Kirby; enemies frozen from Ice Breath freeze after a brief while. Blizzard
Ice Kick Touch a frozen enemy Kirby kicks an enemy frozen in a block of ice; this can be done by touching the ice block or by using an air bullet. The block of ice travels in a straight path in the opposite direction that Kirby is touching the block of ice from and ignores terrain and breakable blocks. None

Kirby's Dream Land 2 and Kirby's Dream Land 3

Ice can be combined with one of the Animal Friends to give it a different move. It is also the only Copy Ability that can destroy the Ice Ability Blocks.

In Kirby's Dream Land 2, Ice can be combined with Rick, Coo, or Kine. An enemy frozen in a block of ice travels in straight path in the opposite direction that Kirby is touching the block of ice from and ignores terrain, but not breakable blocks. Ice is particularly effective at defeating Propeller Bombs, as it instantly freezes them, whereas other attacks would simply stun them if they are angry. Ice can be obtained from Master Pengy or the Mr. Frosty mid-boss (which had given the Freeze Copy Ability prior to this game).

In Kirby's Dream Land 3, Ice can also be combined with Nago, ChuChu, and Pitch. Gooey, who behaves near identically to Kirby, can also obtain Ice. An enemy frozen in a block of ice travels in straight path in the opposite direction that Kirby is touching the block of ice from and penetrates enemies; it does not ignore terrain, breaking at walls, but can go up slopes on the ground or down slopes on the ceiling. Ice is required to defeat the Metroids in Stage 2 of Iceberg to obtain the Heart Star from Samus. Ice can be obtained from Chilly (which had given the Freeze Copy Ability prior to this game), Wappa, the Ice Bukiset, and Yuki.

None B Y Kirby exhales icy breath for as long as the button is held. Any enemy defeated by Kirby's breath will transform into a block of ice. In Kirby's Dream Land 2, Ice Breath travels 3 tiles, can hit objects slightly below the area directly in front of Kirby, and ignores terrain. In Kirby's Dream Land 3, Ice Breath travels 2 tiles and does not ignore terrain, instead breaking on walls and traveling on certain slopes. Blizzard
Rick B Y Kirby and Rick become a large two part snowman for as long as the button is held. In Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby and Rick surround themselves in ice particles that freeze enemies and hit all adjacent tiles and ignore terrain, similarly to Freeze. In Kirby's Dream Land 3, ice particles fall from the top of the snowman in a cone shape at five different angles; the first particle drops down, the second particle drops up to 2 tiles to the right, the third particle drops up to 2 tiles to the left, the fourth particle drops up to 1 tile to the right, and the fifth particle drops up to 1 tile to the left. After the fifth ice particle drops, the pattern repeats. The particles can hit as high as 1 tile above Kirby and as low as 2 tiles below Rick. Rick will slide if moving while activating; contact can freeze enemies, but only the ice particles can destroy blocks. Blizzard KDL2 Ice Rick sprite
KDL2 Ice Rick sprite 2
KDL3 Ice Rick sprite
Coo B Y In Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby can aim his ice breath in the half circle below Coo for as long as the button is held; initially, he aims forward, but pressing the opposite direction causes his angle change in increments of 36°. Holding the opposite direction allows Kirby to quickly rotate until he has turned 180°. If Kirby rotates 72° or less, he will face forward when the move is over; if Kirby rotates 108° or more, he will face backward when the move is over. Coo loses altitude when the move is used. In Kirby's Dream Land 3, Kirby exhales some icy breath that Coo then converts into three ice crystal projectiles that are fired forward, with one going straight, and the other two going above or below it by 30°. This change was likely to replicates Coo's Cutter attack in Kirby's Dream Land 2, which was changed in Kirby's Dream Land 3. Blizzard KDL2 Ice Coo sprite
KDL2 Ice Coo sprite 2

Kine B Y In Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kine surrounds himself in ice particles that freeze enemies and hit all adjacent tiles and ignore terrain, similarly to Freeze; Kine can keep moving while the move is active. If the button is held down for two seconds, Kine freezes himself in a block of ice and becomes vulnerable. If the player repeatedly presses the button, the effect is effectively infinite, and it also interrupts Kine's flopping when moving on land, instead causing him to slide forward at a constant speed. In Kirby's Dream Land 3, Kine freezes himself right away and stays frozen or 1.5 seconds. While frozen, Kine acts like stone, dropping and becoming invincible, as well as sliding if moving beforehand; contact freezes enemies and destroys breakable blocks. Blizzard KDL2 Ice Kine sprite

Nago N/A Y Kirby exhales icy breath downward 2 tiles for as long as the button is held. While exhaling, Kirby and Nago will be propelled upward. Blizzard KDL3 Ice Nago sprite
ChuChu N/A Y ChuChu converts Kirby's icy breath into snowballs, which she throws at three different angles for as long as the button is held. The first snowball has a low arc, the second snowball has a medium arc, the third snowball has a high arc, and the fourth snowball has a medium arc. After the fourth snowball, the pattern repeats. On level ground, the first, second, and fourth snowballs land 5 tiles ahead, while the third snowball lands 3 tiles ahead; they appear to have infinite downward range. Blizzard KDL3 Ice ChuChu sprite
Pitch N/A Y Kirby rotates a crank on Pitch's head that causes him to exhale wavering icy breath for as long as the button is held. The ice breath travels 4.5 tiles and can be angled upward slightly. Blizzard KDL3 Ice Pitch sprite

Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra

Ice now has multiple moves, with its dash attack being based on the similar Copy Ability Freeze and it having other methods of using ice besides breathing it. Most of Ice's moves can freeze an enemy in a block of ice. In addition to being obtained from Chilly, who is its Helper, Ice can also be obtained from Mr. Frosty (both of which had given the Freeze Copy Ability prior to this game) and Marx's ice bomb.

In Kirby Super Star Ultra, Ice's crown now has a blue gem instead of an orange one. Ice can also be obtained from Marx Soul's ice bomb.

In Kirby Super Star Ultra, this move hits all adjacent tiles and letting go of B causes the move to end, allowing the move to end sooner or later; the idle version activates after pressing B three times consecutively, allowing the move to come out faster and skip the Ice Breath move entirely if fast enough. Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

Ice can be combined with other Copy Abilities to create Power Combos, which can be used to create various icy options. Ice is capable of destroying blue color-coded blocks. An enemy frozen in a block of ice travels in straight path in the opposite direction that Kirby is touching the block of ice from; it is destroyed upon hitting a wall or enemy, and it does not destroy breakable blocks. Ice can be obtained from Chilly, Propeller, Emp, Frigis, and Miracle Matter's Ice form.

Power Combos

Power Combo Description
Ice Kirby spins around while exhaling icy breath for as long as the B button is held. Kirby can move while performing this move. Any enemy defeated by Kirby's breath will transform into a block of ice.
Burning + Ice
(Melting Ice Block)
Kirby encases himself in an ice cube before flames melt it away by pressing B.
Stone + Ice
(Curling Stone)
Kirby transforms into a curling stone and slides along the ground and bounces off walls by pressing B. Pressing B again or having Kirby slow down to a stop reverts the transformation. Any enemy that touches Kirby while transformed will turn into a block of ice that is positioned above Kirby when he passes. Kirby is mostly invincible during this move.
Ice + Ice
(Rolling Snowball)
Kirby encases himself in a ball of snow and rolls along the ground by pressing B. Pressing B again or having Kirby crash into a wall causes the snowball to explode, which damages nearby enemies. Any enemy Kirby runs over will be caught in the snowball. When the snowball explodes, the five most recently captured enemies are scattered above Kirby before being defeated.
Ice + Needle
(Giant Spiny Snowflake)
Kirby encases himself in ice that slowly expands into a giant snowflake by holding B. Any enemy that touches Kirby while transformed will turn into a block of ice.
Ice + Bomb
(Explosive Snowman)
Kirby sets a bomb on his head and disguises himself as a snowman by pressing B. The bomb explodes upon contact with an enemy or after a set period of time. This explosion does not damage Kirby, and sends off snow particles that can freeze enemies in blocks of ice.
Ice + Spark
(Refrigerator)
Kirby transforms into a fridge by pressing B. Pressing B again reverts the transformation. When transformed, Kirby throws out up to three different food items at different arcs. The first food item has a high arc, the second food item has a medium arc, and the third food item has a low arc. These food items damage enemies when they are thrown, and can be picked up as regular food after they land. Kirby will not automatically revert the transformation after throwing three food items.
Ice + Cutter
(Ice Skating)
Kirby's feet turn into ice skates by pressing B. Kirby now moves around by skating, and jumping will cause him to perform a damaging spinning jump. Pressing B again will cause Kirby's skates to go away.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad

As with Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, which preceded it, Ice is limited to Ice Breath. An enemy frozen in a block of ice travels in a straight path in the opposite direction that Kirby is touching the block of ice from and ignores terrain and breakable blocks. Ice no longer makes Kirby blue, likely due to the potential confusion in multiplayer and the Spray Paint function that allows the player to change the color of Kirby. Ice can be obtained from Pengy, Mr. Frosty (which had given the Freeze Copy Ability prior to this game), and Dark Mind's blue stars.

In Kirby: Squeak Squad, Ice can freeze water, extinguish fires, and harden lava. Upon obtaining the Ice Ability Scroll, located in the first Treasure Chest in the Extra Stage of Jam Jungle, Ice can now aim its ice breath up and down.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land

As with Kirby Super Star Ultra, which preceded it, Ice now has many moves at its disposal, the most it has had in all of its appearances, but its ice breath can no longer penetrate terrain normally. Ice now has a second dash attack, which grants it invincibility. Ice's guard has been changed to completely block most types of damage instead of just being an aesthetic difference; releasing this guard also does minor damage to nearby enemies. Ice can now extinguish Fire Blocks. Ice can be obtained from Chilly, Snowl, Goriath's snowballs, and White Sphere Doomer's orbs.

Kirby Battle Royale

Ice appears as an unlockable Copy Ability. It can be unlocked in The Cake Royale after obtaining 150 League Points in the Platinum League. Ice is notable for being able to freeze opponents in blocks of ice. Every player has an invisible freeze gauge when Ice is being used. When this gauge fills, the player will be frozen. Ice has headgear based on Mr. Frosty, Freeze, and Snow Bowl.

In Kirby: Right Back at Ya!

HnK Ice 2

Ice Kirby in the anime

Ice Kirby appears in the anime. In Kirby Right Back at Ya!, he uses a slightly different hat design from the games with a six-pointed blue gem and small visor at the front. His skin turns into a light blue color, and his feet turn dark purple, as it does in Kirby Super Star. He can breathe icy wind at his enemy to freeze him or her, and naturally it's not very useful against an ice-based foe, like Ice Dragon, unless it's an "inside" job, but can use the Freezer Suction/Ejection and Ice Kick on non-ice foes.

Transformation Sequence

In the transformation sequence, a chill wind makes Kirby shiver and turn blue before his crown of ice crystals appears and Kirby wears a visor crown.

In the Super Smash Bros. series

Ice Kirby appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Despite being based on its Kirby's Return to Dream Land appearance, the trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U still has Kirby colored blue instead of pink. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Kirby uses Ice Breath as his second Standard Special Custom Move. Kirby stands in place and exhales ice from his mouth. Opponents who touch it will be frozen.

Kirby when he copies an enemy with chilly abilities. Ice Kirby can blow an icy wind from his mouth and freeze enemies solid. These frozen enemies can then be knocked into other enemies as an additional means of attack. These blocks are not only effective against enemies but can also be used on terrain such as magma or water.

Trivia

  • In Kirby's Adventure, Kirby will turn pale white and blue to signify this change. In later games without ability caps, he only changes color as he performs his special move.
  • Despite Ice being the more common Copy Ability between Freeze and itself, Freeze made an appearance in the Kirby series before Ice; Mr. Frosty, the source of Freeze, is encountered before Pengy, the source of Ice.
  • Along with Sword and Tornado, Ice is the fourth most commonly used Copy Ability in Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, with five appearances.
  • As of Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, Kirby won't slip on ice if he has this ability.
  • Ice Kirby's headband on his trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl includes the six-pointed star or flake from the anime, which was not added to the games until Kirby's Return to Dream Land when the hat was given a slight redesign.
  • Curiously, in Kirby Super Star Ultra, the round gem is blue instead of orange. Also, in Kirby's sprite for Kirby Super Star, Ice Kirby's crown shares the same look as Fire Kirby and Plasma Kirby, though with a different color scheme.
  • In Kirby: Squeak Squad, Kirby's Ice Breath is able to freeze water into small ice cubes, allowing him to walk on it. The ice can be broken by his normal attacks or other Copy Abilities. Also, if Kirby hits water or enemies in Quick Fall mode, his crown will freeze them.
