“ | Gorimondo considers the local shopping mall to be his personal territory. As part of the Beast Pack's executive council, he's in charge of capturing Waddle Dees and gathering food. He tends to eat all the fruit himself... He just can't help it! This behavior has earned him an earful from his boss more than once.” |
— Capsule Description • Kirby and the Forgotten Land |
Gorimondo is a boss in the Kirby series, debuting in Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
Physical Appearance[]
Gorimondo is a large ape with gray skin and black fur. He has broad arms and short, stubby legs. He has small, white eyes with black pupils and a large, fuzzy snout. He has a white mohawk and a black ring piercing on his right nostril, giving him a punk-like appearance. On each of his shoulders are three red stripes, and he has red paint streaks on both of his cheeks. Around his neck, he wears a chain that holds a golden cage containing three Waddle Dees inside. After completing The Brawl at the Mall for the first time, the golden chain is replaced by a ship anchor.
Games[]
Kirby and the Forgotten Land[]
In Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Gorimondo is a high-ranking member of the Beast Pack who serves as the boss of Natural Plains and the first boss of the game, with the boss title of Strong-Armed Beast.
Before his battle, Gorimondo can be seen swinging and jumping around the level in which he appears in. He collects a large stash of bananas on the side of the mall when Kirby enters, which can be consumed to restore to full health. Later, Kirby and Elfilin head through a room just outside his arena and are found by him, prompting him to reach in through the wall and drag Kirby out to battle him. With the pink puff in his hands, Gorimondo will pinch Kirby, prompting the player to spin the control stick to escape, starting the battle. If Kirby fails to escape, Gorimondo will throw Kirby against the ground for some pre-battle damage before starting the battle. If Kirby is defeated in battle, a warp star appears, allowing Kirby to skip the cutscene and attack.
During battle, Gorimondo can pull up rocks from the ground while far away and throw them at Kirby. Close-up, he can swing his arms at Kirby in an attempt to hit them. At this distance he is also able to perform an attack in which he readies his hand and soon after attempts to grab Kirby. When successful, Gorimondo will then lift Kirby just as he did before the battle. When Kirby is up to his legs, he also pauses briefly before performing a stomp which sends out a shockwave, alongside a variation of this where he jumps up before the stomp, commonly performed after the normal stomp attack.
When Gorimondo has a third of his health remaining, the second phase of the battle will first start as he jump away a distance from Kirby, and will spin with his arms outstretched while following Kirby as an attack, and gains the ability to do this for the rest of the fight, typically after retreating when Kirby is too close to his position. Gorimondo also stops throwing rocks at Kirby, in favor of jumping directly to his location to attack, alongside performing the spin attack when Kirby runs too far away to be reached after a jump.
Gorimondo is later refought in Gathering of the Beast Council, the fourth stage in Redgar Forbidden Lands. He is the first boss to be battled, and much like Sillydillo and Clawroline, he starts the battle on his final phase, with all of his attacks available to him. Gorimondo can also be fought in the Colosseum in both the Meta Knight Cup and the Ultimate Cup.
As with the other bosses in the main story, he has a phantom counterpart, Phantom Gorimondo, which is fought in Isolated Isles: Forgo Dreams and The Ultimate Cup Z. He later appears with other Beast Pack members at the end of the level, carrying one of the soul fragments needed to restore Leongar.
Etymology[]
Gorimondo's name is a portmanteau of "gorilla", referencing his appearance; and "mondo", which can mean "world" in various languages, and is also English slang for "big".
Trivia[]
- Gorimondo is the only normal level boss in Kirby and the Forgotten Land to not be preceded with a Maxim Tomato; instead, the player can heal from his hoard of bananas.
- With the Attack Boost effect active, if Kirby performs a Quake Surge with a fully upgraded Twin Drill ability, Gorimondo will be instantly KO'ed if he's caught in the radius.
- Gorimondo is one of the few first-world bosses that is not Whispy Woods or a variant of him. Others include King Dedede in Kirby: Squeak Squad and Fangora in Kirby's Epic Yarn.
