Have you ridden the turtle-like Gondolus? It will carry you along a river of sand.

Gondolus is a large enemy in the Kirby series, debuting in Kirby Mass Attack.

Physical Appearance[]

Gondolus is a large creature that looks like a mechanical apatosaurus or tortoise. It is made completely out of stone and metal, with the center of its body being hollow. It has a fragile green shell that can be destroyed by throwing objects down on it. Its body has several nails sticking out of it. Gondolus has a long, segmented metal neck with a robotic head. It wears a pair of purple headphones with a black star in the center. The creature also has three wooden wheels that it uses to sail across the sandy river.

Games[]

Kirby Mass Attack[]

Gondolus appears exclusively in Stage 4 of Sandy Canyon. When the Kirbys take the bottom path, they find a door. The creature smashes through a wall of Metal Blocks, inhales the door, and sails away down a river of quicksand. The Kirbys get in an autocannon and fire themselves onto the enemy, cracking its shell slightly.

The Kirbys ride on Gondolus' shell. The door the enemy swallowed resides in its stomach, which can be accessed by breaking through the enemy's shell. The Kirbys must grab the various enemies and objects found along the path and slam them into Gondolus' shell to damage it. These include Soarars, Jerkweeds, a turnip, and an item bubble. The shell is made of three layers, and each layer is broken with three hits (unless a particularly large object smashes into it, breaking the layer instantly).

If Gondolus' shell is not broken in time, the enemy falls down the sandy waterfall at the end. This KOs the Kirbys, resulting in an instant Game Over.

Gondolus' theme is called "Swallowed Exit" in the Music Player.

Etymology[]

Gondolus' name is derived from the word gondola, a traditional Venetian rowing boat.

Its Japanese name ヒョッコリ (Hyokkori), comes from the Japanese onomatopoeia for taking a deep breath, ヒョオオ (hyoo), referencing how it inhales the door.

Related Quotes[]

If you ride the Gondolus down the river of sand, you'll see a chest beyond a breakable slab of brown stone. You'll need to bring lots of Kirbys along to break the slab fast enough. Fast enough to then do what? That I don't know.

Riding the Gondolus down the river of sand has a fairly, let's say, FINAL end. But if you hang on, you'll see one last flock of Soarars. Get what you want from them. And then get OUT before it's too late.
