Galaxia is a legendary sword that serves as Meta Knight's primary weapon.

Due to ambiguity on whether Meta Knight is wielding Galaxia or a different sword, most swords used by Meta Knight are covered here.

Physical Appearance[]

Galaxia is most prominently depicted as golden-colored, with branches extending from the sides of the blade, and being of comparable length to Meta Knight himself. The hilt is a darker golden color with a crossguard that angles toward the blade and features a ruby gem; this gem is either circular or ovular/elliptical. The amount of branches present on Galaxia has changed over time, and is sometimes inconsistent within the same game. In Kirby: Right Back at Ya! which is the first instance of Meta Knight's sword being given the identity "Galaxia," it is portrayed as a Seven-Branched Sword (having three branches extending on each side, with the sword's point being the seventh branch). In Kirby Air Ride, it is depicted as having only five branches (two on each side); games hereafter would primarily use the seven-branched version or have inconsistent interpretations of it within the same game. Starting in Kirby Mass Attack, Galaxia would consistently be portrayed as having only five branches, excluding references to games and media where it is depicted with seven.

In its portrayal in the anime, Galaxia's blade has the unique property of only phasing into existence once it is unsheathed. This makes its sheath very short, being a simple shallow cup for the small part of the hilt extending above the sword's crossguard, which avoids encumbering Meta Knight's movement. The phasing blade also explains the Hammerspace effect where Meta Knight seemingly produces a sword longer than himself from out of nowhere in the games.

When Kirby wields Galaxia in the anime, he wears the traditional green hat from Sword Kirby, but swings Galaxia instead of an ordinary sword.

The sword Dark Meta Knight wields resembles the sword Meta Knight is depicted wielding in artwork for Kirby & The Amazing Mirror; it is seven-branched, has a silver-colored blade, a hexagonal cross-section, a black hilt and crossguard, and a round sapphire gem. The appearance of this sword has remained mostly consistent in all instances, despite Meta Knight's sword's appearance having changed.

Swords with appearances derivative of Galaxia also appear in other games.

Games[]

Kirby's Adventure[]

KA MetaKnight

Meta Knight's first appearance is in Kirby's Adventure, where he battles Kirby in a sword duel, however his sword doesn't feature a very distinct appearance compared to other swords in the game. In sprites, Meta Knight's sword is identical to Kirby's, being yellow and featuring a crossguard; these are different in appearance from the swords used by Sword Knight and Blade Knight (whose sword sprites lack crossguards). In artwork, Meta Knight's sword is yellow with a diamond cross-section and a bow-tie style crossguard, while Kirby's is gray with a diamond cross-section and a round yellow crossguard; Sword Knight and Blade Knight also have yellow swords with diamond cross-sections, but have round crossguards.

Kirby's Avalanche[]

KAv Meta Knight Credits

Meta Knight's sword is colored gray with a diamond cross-section and a golden crossguard featuring a purple gem. This is the only occurrence with a purple gem in the hilt.

Kirby Super Star[]

KSS MetaKnight

Meta Knight's sword is made more distinct compared to Kirby's and Blade Knight's. Kirby's sword is colored yellow (colored gray in the Revenge of Meta Knight Cork Board icon) with a diamond cross-section, a blue crossguard angled toward the blade (round crossguard in artwork), and has a red gem in the hilt (gem is absent in artwork); Blade Knight's is colored gray with two prongs, a diamond cross-section, and has a golden knuckle guard. Meta Knight's sword instead constantly flashes yellow, orange, and green (simply glowing yellow in artwork), has a diamond cross-section, features a yellow bow-tie styled crossguard (golden and angled toward the blade in artwork), and has a red gem in the hilt.

Kirby's Star Stacker (Super Famicom)[]

KSSS Story Meta Knight

Meta Knight's sword is inconsistently-portrayed in the game. Meta Knight's portrait reuses his Kirby Super Star artwork (his official artwork is also reused from Kirby Super Star), but his appearance in cutscenes, his playfield background, and his battle sprites all depict his sword as being gray instead of gold; all other aspects are otherwise consistent with his Kirby Super Star artwork, however.

Super Smash Bros. Melee[]

Metatrophy

Super Smash Bros. Melee is the first game to feature Meta Knight after Kirby: Right Back at Ya! started airing in Japan. Meta Knight's trophy depicts him wielding his sword with a design reminiscent of how it appears in the anime. The sword is colored orange with only five branches, a hexagonal cross-section, a golden crossguard angled toward the blade, and a round red gem in the hilt.

Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[]

Meta Knight4

Artwork used for Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land and Kirby & The Amazing Mirror

Meta Knight's sword is notably distinct from other swords in the game. In sprites, it is yellow, has a diamond cross-section, a crossguard angled toward the blade, and has a red gem in the hilt; Kirby's sword is gray with a diamond cross-section, a blue crossguard also angled toward the blade, and has an orange gem in the hilt. The blades of Sword Knight and Blade Knight are gray with two prongs and diamond cross-sections, with Sword Knight having a round yellow crossguard while Blade Knight still has a yellow knuckle guard. Meta Knight's artwork depicts the sword as seven-branched and with a hexagonal cross-section and a crossguard that curves toward the blade before curving outward; all other details present in the sprite are otherwise consistent.

Kirby Air Ride[]

AR Meta Knight

Meta Knight's sword only has five branches, but is otherwise consistent with its artwork for Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Kirby's sword is colored yellow—like it was in Kirby Super Star and Kirby: Right Back at Ya!—but otherwise retains its design from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Sword Knight's sword no longer has its prongs, but is otherwise the same as in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror[]

Meta Knight's artwork and sprites for this game are reused from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Despite this, the sword is inconsistently-portrayed.

DarkMK

Dark Meta Knight, who wields a similar sword as a result of being a dark reflection of Meta Knight

Dark Meta Knight's sword in sprites is identical to Meta Knight's aside from color; his blade is silver instead of yellow, his crossguard dark gray instead of gold, and his gem blue instead of red. In sprites, his sword has no branches and has a diamond cross-guard, whereas in artwork it is seven-branched and has a hexagonal cross-section.

Master

Master

After Kirby defeats Dark Meta Knight after entering the Dimension Mirror, a portal appears and sucks Kirby (and any of his newfound friends that are present) away; Meta Knight then hastily throws his sword into the portal to aid Kirby to defeat the true mastermind, Dark Mind. When Kirby picks up the sword, he obtains the Master ability; the sword itself is also given the name "Master Sword" in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Unlike with Meta Knight, who was wielding it earlier, when Kirby wields the sword, it flashes yellow and orange and additionally features a flaming aura around it; its other features in the sprite are otherwise consistent with when Meta Knight wielded it. The artwork for Master is mostly faithful to its in-game sprite, but the gem in the hilt is colored blue instead of red; furthermore, with the artwork being faithful to the in-game sprite, it contradicts the artwork of Meta Knight used for the game, where his sword is seven-branched with a hexagonal cross-section and golden crossguard instead of being without branches with a diamond cross-section and a yellow crossguard.

KatAM The End

The sword as depicted in the ending image.

After defeating Dark Mind and restoring peace to the Mirror World, Kirby and co. depart, entrusting Shadow Kirby to protect the Mirror World; Meta Knight soon flies in thereafter, where he drops his sword, which lands on a pedestal in Central Circle. In the game's ending image, the sword properly has the red gem and gold crossguard, but the blade is now colored gray and with a diamond cross-section.

Other minor details relating to Meta Knight or Master also have differences. When using Magic, the card that summons Meta Knight to attack all on-screen enemies features a sword icon, which features branches and a red gem in the hilt. The icon for Master that appears in the bottom left of the game screen (bottom right on the Pause Screen) features it as gold with no branches and a red gem, while its icon in the top left of the Pause Screen depicts it as having five branches.

Kirby: Squeak Squad[]

Meta Knight323

Meta Knight's sprites are reused from Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land and Kirby & The Amazing Mirror. His artwork depicts his sword similarly to the Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land artwork, but as a more golden/orange color, and the branches of the sword curve outward slightly in a similar manner to the crossguard; the artwork also features a red pointed pommel at the end of the hilt.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

SBBB metaknight

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the first game to call Meta Knight's sword by the name "Galaxia" as part of his Final Smash, "Galaxia Darkness." Galaxia has a yellow blade with five branches, a combined hexagonal with ridges cross-section, a golden crossguard that curves toward the blade before curving outward, and has a red gem in the hilt.

Kirby Super Star Ultra[]

KSSU MK

Meta Knight's sword is inconsistently depicted as having either five or seven branches. Some artwork depicts his sword as having either seven branches, resembling the Kirby: Squeak Squad artwork, while another depicts it having five branches, more resembling Galaxia in Super Smash Bros. Brawl; both artworks feature a hexagonal cross-section. In-game, his sprites are based on his Game Boy Advance and Kirby: Squeak Squad appearances, but otherwise retain the same general appearance. In the FMV movies and images for Meta Knightmare Ultra, the sword is colored yellow, has five branches, and a diamond cross-section. However, the Meta Point gauge, which is shaped like the sword, features seven branches; the gauge's hilt also has a blue gem, but this is likely in reference to how Meta Points look like instead of being an error. When playing as Meta Knight, performing a Knight Beam or Meta Multithrust depicts the sword as having five branches; ironically, when Meta Knight as a boss performs the Meta Multithrust, it does not feature the branches.

Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn[]

KEY Galaxia Sword sprite

Kirby's Epic Yarn is the first Kirby game to call Meta Knight's sword by the name "Galaxia" (more specifically, "Galaxia Sword"), appearing as an Area Patch to gain access to the Battleship Halberd stage and as one of the Furniture items obtainable in said stage. The Galaxia Sword patch depicts it as having five branches and a red gem in the hilt; when used, yellow yarn creates the outline of a sword that has five branches, but the red gem is absent. The Galaxia Sword furniture item is yellow and has seven branches, a diamond cross-section, and a yellow hilt with a red gem and a pommel at the end. Meta Knight is only seen wielding Galaxia twice in Kirby's Epic Yarn: in the "Ambushed" Flick before he is transformed into yarn, and in the item for the "View All" flick, which features him holding a yarn Galaxia that simply resembles one of the colored swords he uses in his boss fight, albeit colored yellow and without the red button.

In Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, Meta Knight also wields Galaxia in the Slash & Bead sub-game; ironically, the icon for said sub-game instead features him holding the green sword he starts his boss fight with (albeit without the button).

Kirby Mass Attack[]

Galaxia 49858

Galaxia appears in several instances. Galaxia is wielded by Meta Knight when fighting him in Strato Patrol EOS and Kirby Quest; Meta Knight's sprites here are derivative of Kirby Super Star Ultra. The image for clearing Chapter 3 in Kirby Quest, where Meta Knight is the final boss, depicts Galaxia with five branches and a diamond cross-section.

Galaxia, without Meta Knight, appears on the title screen and Game Over screen for Kirby Quest, again featuring five branches and a diamond cross-section. Additionally, in Chapter 4 of Kirby Quest, if the player never stops on a "Miss" in Stages 31-38, Stage 39—which would normally have the player fight against Meta Knight, Sword Knight, and Blade Knight—will instead have the player fight Galaxia itself as a boss; Galaxia has 2500 HP—less than Meta Knight's 2600 HP—and rewards at least 3100 EXP, which is the same as the alternative fight against Meta Knight and his knights. If the player stops on "Miss" during this fight, Galaxia attacks by raining down three meteors to hurt three Kirbys at a time. If Galaxia is defeated, Kirby is able to wield it as a powerful weapon to use against the final boss in Stage 40, Dark Matter. Galaxia is used any time "Awesome" is stopped on, to which Kirby swings Galaxia and creates a massive sword beam that deals 9999 damage.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[]

Meta Knight KRTDL

Galaxia has a hexagonal cross-section in Meta Knight's Kirby's Return to Dream Land artwork, but its in-game model has a diamond cross-section; Meta Knight's artwork for Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe gives Galaxia a diamond cross-section, as it is based on the Kirby Star Allies appearance. Furthermore, Galaxia can appear as one of the various swords Ultra Sword Kirby can swing, which is more detailed and has a hexagonal cross-section. Magolor Soul can use attacks based on the Super Abilities; his Ultra Sword attack has him use two swords that resemble Galaxia, instead of the standard Ultra Sword, having light blue blades, slate gray crossguards, and viridian gems.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[]

KTD Dark Meta Knight Shot

While Meta Knight and Galaxia do not physically appear, Dark Meta Knight does. Despite his sword being based on Galaxia (or whatever sword Meta Knight had at the time), Dark Meta Knight's sword still retains its general appearance, particularly that it still has seven branches despite that the current design for Galaxia now only has five; he can also use a technique to create mirror clones of himself, and his sword as a result, as well as Blade Burst, where he creates large projections of his sword out from the ground. Meta Knight's sword also appears (alongside Meta Knight) in several keychains from Kirby's Adventure, Kirby Super Star, and Kirby Super Star Ultra; Dark Meta Knight's sword also appears in his keychain.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U[]

SSBU Meta Knight artwork

Galaxia retains is appearance from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, albeit with the crossguard being more orange in color. Meta Knight's Final Smash is still "Galaxia Darkness."

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse[]

KatRC Meta Knight figurine

Galaxia appears as part of Meta Knight's Figurine and as drawn by Elline in page 18 her Secret Diary, "Kirby's Friends." Elline's drawing depicts it as yellow and with five branches

Kirby: Planet Robobot[]

KPR Meta Knight artwork

As with Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Meta Knight's artwork features Galaxia with a hexagonal cross-section, but with a diamond cross-section on its in-game model. Similarly to in Meta Knightmare Ultra, the gauge for Meta Points in Meta Knightmare Returns is shaped like the sword, but features seven branches.

Mecha Knight and its variants wield a beam sword version of Galaxia; it is pink or blue in color and features seven branches.

Kirby Battle Royale[]

KBR Galaxia Model

Galaxia maintains its design from Kirby: Planet Robobot, but the blade is a more orange-yellow. When using different headgear, Galaxia can be swapped out for Dark Meta Knight's sword, a cane, Mecha Knight's sword, or Galacta Knight's lance.

Kirby Star Allies[]

KSA Meta Knight artwork

Galaxia now features a diamond cross-section in both artwork and for the model. Using the power of the Jamba Heart, Meta Knight can split into up to four individuals, creating up to four Galaxias in the process. Meta Knight's doppelgängers, Dark Meta Knight and Parallel Meta Knight, also have their own versions.

Dark Meta Knight4

Dark Meta Knight's sword retains its design from Kirby: Triple Deluxe with no significant changes, still having seven branches. He can also create reflected copies of his sword with any of his various "Edge" techniques, as well as Blade Burst.

KSA Parallel Meta Knight

Parallel Meta Knight's sword resembles Galaxia in all but color, having a bronze/brown blade and crossguard, but still a red gem in the hilt.

During the battle against Void Termina's demon form, when his fourth weak point (or fifth in Soul Melter EX) is exposed, he replaces his hands with Ultra Swords and imbues them with either Sizzle, Blizzard, or Zap attributes. When imbued with the Blizzard attribute, the swords look similar to Galaxia.

In the Celebration Picture "Super Ultra Battle," Meta Knight's sword is depicted with seven branches and a hexagonal cross-section, likely just in reference to Kirby Super Star Ultra, which the Celebration Picture depicts aspects of.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

MetaKnightSmash

Galaxia now has a hexagonal cross section without ridges. The crossguard is colored orange, but the ring around the red gem has the same yellow color as the blade. When using Meta Knight's seventh or eighth colors, based on Galacta Knight and Dark Meta Knight respectively, Galaxia will change color accordingly. With the Galacta Knight colors, the blade, gem, and hilt are purple and the crossguard is silver. With the Dark Meta Knight colors, the blade and ring are silver, the crossguard and hilt are dark gray, and the gem is blue.

Kirby Fighters 2[]

KF2 Dedede and Meta

Galaxia maintains its appearance from Kirby Star Allies. Similarly to before, Meta Knight maintains the ability to split into four, cloning Galaxia in the process.

Moon Warriors Art

When Meta Knight changes into Waxing Crescent Masked Meta Knight, the sword he wields is similar to Galaxia, but its branches are more curved to resemble the crescent moon, with the second pair of branches being asymmetrical in specific reference to the waxing crescent moon. The crossguard is gray with a red ring around a blue gem, and the hilt is red and punctuated with a red plume.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land[]

MetaKnightFL

Galaxia maintains its appearance from Kirby Star Allies. When fighting Meta Knight in the Colosseum while using the Sword ability (or any of its evolutions), Kirby will clash his sword with Galaxia during the fight's intro. Furthermore, when Meta Knight initiates his Upper Caliber technique, Kirby can engage in a sword clash by attacking while Meta Knight is charging at him; by mashing the button fast enough, Kirby can counter Meta Knight's attack and cause him to drop Galaxia. If Kirby inhales or touches the fallen Galaxia, Kirby will copy the Meta Knight Sword evolution, regardless of which Sword evolution is set in Waddle Dee Weapons Shop and regardless of whether the evolution has even been unlocked by obtaining its Blueprint (from clearing the Meta Knight Cup) and paying 1200 Star Coins and 3 Rare Stones to buy it.

KatFL Unmasked Meta

Meta Knight, now without a sword, retreats and returns with a new sword. This sword bears a striking resemblance to how his sword was depicted in his Kirby's Adventure artwork. Meta Knight's fight is otherwise unchanged when using this sword and, like Galaxia, can also be knocked out of his hand if his Upper Caliber is countered; this sword will simply be destroyed if this happens, and Meta Knight will once again get a new one.

Phantom MK

Phantom Meta Knight has a phantom version of Galaxia. It is mostly identical to the original, but features a pink crossguard. Like in the fight against the original Meta Knight, it can be knocked out of Phantom Meta Knight's hand and gives the Meta Knight Sword ability.

In Kirby: Right Back at Ya![]

Cannon DAuJLJbVYAER17h This section contains information that does not coincide with the main series canon.

If my mother gave her life for this, I shall too.
— Sirica • Kirby: Right Back at Ya!

Galaxia is first named in episode 60 (Crusade for the Blade) of Kirby: Right Back at Ya! which aired in December 7th, 2002 in Japan. This is the episode where all the available backstory of the sword comes from, as no details are ever revealed about it in the games.

In Kabu's own words, Galaxia is a powerful sword forged by Photron, the mighty ruler of the fire people, "in a time long forgotten, thousands of years ago when the universe was young," created "with a will and life of its own." Galaxia's name was given by Photron himself, but for what purpose it was forged for, and who was its intended wielder, was never revealed. Nightmare Enterprises sent Kirisakin to steal the sword, hide it away in a dark cave, and guard it throughout the millennia that will come to pass until it is seen again. According to Kabu, possession of Galaxia gives Nightmare the power to control the universe, but how, he did not elaborate. The sword did lie dormant in the cave for a long time, so despite what Kabu had said, Nightmare must have had difficulties harnessing the sword's power; since if he had, he would have succeeded in his goal of ruling the universe millennia ago.

Its legend lived on, however, and Meta Knight and Garlude were eventually sent by the Star Warriors which they were associated with to retrieve the sword. The two met their match against Kirisakin, a monster powerful in its own right. Garlude sacrificed her life to make the mission a success, and Meta Knight escaped with Galaxia and a heavy heart.

It is not until many years later when Sirica, Garlude's daughter, sought out Meta Knight to retrieve the sword for herself, as she was misled that Meta Knight betrayed Garlude and left her to die to keep the sword to himself. Her opinions were corrected by Galaxia's sentient voice itself when she touched the sword and it found her to be unworthy of wielding it, and Sirica later became an ally of Meta Knight.

Galaxia's name sounds masculine in Japanese pronunciation and feminine in English. As a result, the sword's voice is male in the original, and female in the 4Kids dub.

Transformation Sequence[]

The transformation sequence is the exact same as Sword, however, above the hilt, instead of the regular sword, it forms Galaxia, with electricity bursting out of it.

Properties[]

Ep60 Galaxia beam

Galaxia's sword beam

In Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, Galaxia was forged with a spirit and will of its own, and so may only be wielded by a select, powerful few. The unworthy either get harmed, killed, or are turned evil when they touch it, which makes the sword radiate overwhelming amounts of electricity. In the games, Meta Knight was also shown weaponizing this same kind of electricity into an attack in Kirby: Squeak Squad. Only Kirby and Meta Knight wielded Galaxia in the anime (Kirby wields it three times). Whoever wields Galaxia was shown to have virtually all moves by Meta Knight used in the past games, including the sword beam attack which appeared in Kirby Super Star. In the anime, Sword Kirby can still produce sword beams, but when wielding Galaxia, the beam takes the form of a concentrated blast of golden/green energy instead of white, and is powerful enough to shatter rock, create immense crevasses in the ground, and completely overwhelm opponents' defenses and slice them right in two.

In the games, Meta Knight wields it like Sword Kirby, but with several additional moves. In Meta Knightmare Ultra, he makes use of his trademark Mach Tornado by spinning Galaxia around him.

Etymology[]

"Galaxia" is Spanish and Portuguese for "galaxy." This may either be because of Meta Knight's Spanish accent in the dub, or because of the Japanese name for the Star Warriors, the Galaxy Soldier Army. The latter is more likely, as Meta Knight did not have a Spanish accent in the Japanese (original) version of the anime.

Related Quotes[]

I, Kabu, the All-Knowing, shall show you. Let us travel back into a time long-forgotten. Thousands of years ago, when the universe was young, Photron, the mighty ruler of the fire people, began to forge a great sword. He called this sword Galaxia. This was no ordinary sword, for it was created with a will and life of its own, and glistened with great mystical powers. eNeMeE sent the monster Kirisakin to steal the Galaxia sword. It was hidden in a dark cave and the great beast guarded it for years. Much time passed. Meta Knight and Garlude found themselves in the cave of Kirisakin. The mighty warriors had been sent to retrieve the sacred sword. Meta Knight saved Galaxia, and the evil empire of eNeMeE no longer possessed the power to control the universe.
— Kabu • Crusade for the Blade
My name is Galaxia. Only the most powerful of knights may wield my ancient magic. Meta Knight is the chosen one. Your mother Garlude knew well this truth. In sacrificing her life, Garlude made the ultimate sacrifice.
— Galaxia, to Sirica • Crusade for the Blade
Meta Knight's Final Smash. He flips his cape, and the darkness within envelops his foes and plunges the world into shadow. He then unleashes a series of sword strikes that do terrible damage and launch his foes. In the darkness, Meta Knight can also reach and attack distant enemies. One can imagine Meta Knight zipping back and forth at high speed to accomplish this.
— Trophy description • Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Meta Knight swings his cape to ensnare foes. Darkness falls, enveloping them in an empty void and then a giant sword slash cleaves the blackness. If the cape doesn't capture anyone, this Final Smash will fail. It has more range than you might think, though and you only have to catch one foe to deal damage to everyone!

Trivia[]

  • In Kirby Mass Attack, for the Kirby Quest sub-game, Galaxia is shown in the background of the logo.
  • In Galaxia's first appearance in Kirby: Right Back at Ya! (Crusade for the Blade), the Japanese voice for Galaxia was male, but in the English dub, it was female.
