— Instruction manual description • Kirby's Block Ball

The Flip[1] is an item in the Kirby series, debuting in Kirby's Block Ball.

Physical Appearance[]

Flip is a white panel with an image of two boxes, one white and one gray, and two arrows that point from one box to the other.

Games[]

Kirby's Block Ball[]

Despite the fact that the game first brings attention to the item in the intro to Brobo's stage, Flip is introduced in Squishy's stage. When the ball touches it, the entire screen flashes rapidly, and block colors are reversed; white blocks turn gray and gray blocks turn white. This increases the number of hits required to break blocks that were previously white and decreases the hits needed to break blocks that were previously gray. The item is dropped by Booler, Wheelie, Blocky, Twister, Chilly, Mumbies, and UFO, making it the most common item in the game.

Trivia[]

  • Flip holds the distinction of potentially being the most counterproductive item in Kirby's Block Ball. Its effect can decrease or increase the time it takes Kirby (unaided) to clear a round, and increasing the time the player spends there can also increase Kirby's risk of losing a life to the spikes. The increase in hits gives Kirby an opportunity to earn more points toward the border line, but he does not gain this benefit if the player instinctively uses Copy Abilities to destroy the affected blocks. If Kirby collects two Flips in one round, the second Flip nullifies the effect of the first (though this depends on actions taken during the first item's effect).
