The Dark Matter species is a race of beings that are often characterized by having a single eye. Most members and speculated members appear as a major antagonistic force in various games of the Kirby series. Although their goal may vary between individuals, most of them attempt to invade planets and cover them in darkness. Presumably being made of darkness and negative energy, some members are weak to light and positive energy, as shown with the Rainbow Sword and the Love-Love Stick. Members of the species also have the ability to possess and control others’ bodies to do their bidding. In the past, Hyness’s clan worshipped the “matter of darkness.” This implies that the Dark Matter species (or the material they’re made of) was worshipped by them.

"Real" Dark Matter

Regular Dark Matter are the most common members of the species, given that they can be mass-produced by Zero as an attack in Kirby's Dream Land 3. Because of that, they can be seen as the grunts of the species. Their true form is usually that of a black sphere with a single eye and additional orange spheres surrounding their body, a form often referred to as "real" Dark Matter.

One specific individual Dark Matter has a few recurring appearances throughout the series, with his most notable one being Kirby's Dream Land 2, where he served as the main antagonist and true final boss. While his true form is identical to the others', he can be differentiated in that he has a unique form known as Dark Matter Blade, where he takes on a knight-like appearance and wields a sword. Others may also have the ability to use this form, but that remains ambiguous.

According to General Director Shinya Kumazaki on Miiverse in the Kirby: Planet Robobot Drawing and Screenshot Challenge, Dark Matter have the ability to materialize their memories. This explains how the Dark Matter Clone is able to wield the Rainbow Sword in Kirby: Planet Robobot. It is unknown if other members of the species have this ability.

Gooey[]

Gooey KF2

Gooey is a docile Dark Matter that is friends with Kirby, being introduced in Kirby's Dream Land 2. Gooey is very much unlike other members of the species, despite being made of the same material as them. He has two eyes instead of one, a mouth with a long tongue, and can use Copy Abilities like Kirby. Gooey does have a similarity in that he can take flight via his Mock Matter form, where he resembles Real Dark Matter and can use their lightning attacks. However, he retains his normal face.

Zero[]

Zero

Zero is the leader of the Dark Matter species, or at least the leader of most members, serving as the main antagonist and true final boss of Kirby's Dream Land 3. Zero is shown to have the ability to create Dark Matter, meaning that it is the presumed spawn of them. Zero mainly attacks by shooting blood at its opponents, and can also detach its eye from its socket as a last resort.

Dark Rimuru, Dark Rimura, and Dark Rimuro[]

DarkTrio

Dark Rimuru, Dark Rimura, and Dark Rimuro are a trio of Dark Matter that appeared in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. They were the ones who shattered Ripple Star’s crystal and forced Kirby and friends to gather the Crystal Shards. They are not technically fought directly, instead possessing a Waddle Dee, Adeleine, and King Dedede and making them fight. After Kirby defeats and frees the victims, the trio fly off and are never seen again, leaving their fate unknown. Their appearance is vaguely similar to a Real Dark Matter, and much like regular Dark Matter, they look identical to each other. However, it’s unknown if they are the same kind of Dark Matter as that.

Miracle Matter[]

Miracle-Matter

Miracle Matter is a supposedly elite member of the Dark Matter species. Not much is known about Miracle Matter, as there is not much information about it. Unlike other members, Miracle Matter's body is covered with eyes. It is shown to have the ability to take on different forms that have the same powers as Kirby’s Copy Abilities in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.

Speculated Members[]

This box contains speculation that should not be taken as fact.

The following beings listed below are not confirmed to be a member of the Dark Matter species. Rather, they are speculated to be members or at least related due to having similar characteristics to members of the species.

N-Z

K64 N-Z artwork 2

N-Z is an enemy in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, seemingly replacing the Waddle Dees. Despite not looking anything like Dark Matter, N-Zs can be seen falling out of the dark cloud that Miracle Matter presumably resides in at the end of Stage 3 of Ripple Star. Additionally, they are the only enemies to appear in Dark Star apart from 0².

Zerotwo

0² is the main antagonist and true final boss of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. 0² was also the leader of the Dark Matter in the game. Its appearance and name seem to suggest that it is a revived form of Zero. However, it is unknown if this is the case. In the 20th Anniversary Hoshi no Kirby Pupupu Taizen, 0² is brought up due to its similarities. However, it is then stated that its true connection to the Dark Matter species is unknown, despite its name, appearance, and it leading the Dark Matter (however, the case of the latter is present only in English version, as in Japanese sources the antagonistic force is simply called the "Black Cloud" (くろくも Kuroi Kumo) and is not mentioned to be related to Dark Matter).

Dark Mind

First Form

Second Form

Dark Mind is the main antagonist and final boss of Kirby & The Amazing Mirror. Dark Mind’s true form is an orange, fiery orb with a single, vertical eye. His appearance in this form has lead many to believe that he is a Mirror World version of Zero. As King D-Mind, the final boss of Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, Dark Mind resides within the stomach, which is where the Dark Matter reside when they possess King Dedede in Kirby's Dream Land 3 and Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. His mirror and reflecting laser attacks are also used by Void, another presumed member.

Dark Nebula

Dark Nebula is the final boss of Kirby: Squeak Squad. Having been sealed away in a chest, it was released by Daroach, who thought the chest contained treasure. Dark Nebula has similar characteristics to the Dark Matter species, such as having a single eye and having the ability to possess others. In the Japanese version of the game, Dark Nebula is named “Dark Zero,” possibly referencing Zero. Like 0², Dark Nebula is brought up in the 20th Anniversary Hoshi no Kirby Pupupu Taizen because of these similarities. However, it is also stated that its true connection to the species is unknown.

Master Crown

Crown Tree

The Master Crown is a sentient crown that was crafted by the ancients that grants its wearer limitless power at the cost of their very soul. After Kirby and friends defeat Magolor for the first time, the crown takes control of him and turns him into a manifestation of itself. During the fight with Magolor in this state, one can sometimes see an eye with a red iris and a black pupil in his mouth. This eye resembles that of a Dark Matter’s (and to a lesser extent, Zero’s), leading some to believe that the crown may be related to the species in some way. Additionally, in both phases of the fight with Magolor, the Master Crown has the design of an eye, which the Dark Matter species is mostly known for. Also, the music that plays in the fight against Magolor's first form when he wears the Master Crown is a heavily remixed version of Hyper Zone, the place Dark Matter is fought in Kirby's Dream Land 3. Void Termina, a reincarnation of Void, another presumed member, also uses swords that have hilts that are nearly identical to the Master Crown, and even uses a replica of it to fire lasers.

Dark Crafter

Dark Crafter1

Dark Crafter is the true main antagonist and final boss of Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. Dark Crafter has many similarities to the Dark Matter species, such as having a single eye and having the ability to possess others. His name has the same vowel sounds as “matter” as well. He also is dark in color, as shown after he is rammed by Kirby with the Star Dash and loses his color, although it’s unknown if this is his true color.

Void

Astral Void

Void is the god of the Jambastion Religion. He has many different references to other members and speculated members, such as having Miracle Matter’s needle attack and making 0²‘s false face. Like Gooey, Void even has a form resembling that of Real Dark Matter, though Void actually has a single eye in that form. Void also has the Boss Butch version of Hyper Zone as his splash screen. In the Japanese version of Kirby Star Allies, Void is implied to have been created from Dark, along with the other chaos and possibilities, Dream, Soul, and Heart, gathering together in a substance of sorts. Likewise, Void Termina and Void Soul, a reincarnation and variation of Void, are also heavily implied to be related to the Dark Matter race.
