—  Capsule Description • Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Clawroline, also known by her true name, Carol, is a character in the Kirby series, debuting as a boss in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. She is one of the rulers of the animal kingdom in the forgotten world alongside Leon.

Physical Appearance[]

Clawroline is an anthropomorphic leopard with gold fur and beige accents, brown leopard spots covering the majority of her body. She has narrow, almond-shaped, yellow eyes with violet irises, along with glittery, light purple eyeshadow and long, pointy eyelashes. On her muzzle is a small, brown nose with two whiskers on each side. She has a slender body with an hourglass-like figure, a large tuft of beige fur on her chest, and a long tail with a brown tip. Additionally, she has brown ears and four-fingered paws, with each finger having a claw painted at the tips in glittery purple nail polish which can seemingly extend to great lengths.

History[]

Many years after the people of the ancient civilization abandoned the forgotten world due to overpopulation, Carol and Leon became the rulers of the animal kingdom, which flourished in the absence of the people.

One day, Leon came across Lab Discovera and wandered inside it, where he discovered the abandoned Fecto Forgo trapped in the Eternal Capsule. Sensing a chance of escape, Fecto Forgo took over Leon's mind with the psychic powers emitted by their dreams, turning him into their pawn. Leon, now named Leongar, started to behave strangely, speaking in a language Carol and the other animals couldn't understand and forming the vicious Beast Pack. Regardless, Carol still believed in him and followed suit, changing her name to Clawroline. Eventually, Clawroline and all the other animals would have their minds taken over as well, turning them into violent beasts as they join the Beast Pack and search for Fecto Forgo's other half, Elfilin, leading to Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land[]

Clawroline debuts in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, serving as the boss of the third world, Wondaria Remains, and is overall the third boss of the game. She has the boss title of Lethal Leopard. She also has a minor role in the story.

Story[]

After the Beast Pack had captured the Waddle Dees transported to the forgotten world by Fecto Forgo under Leongar's orders, Kirby and Elfilin set out to rescue them, having already defeated another commander, Gorimondo. Hearing of the heroes' exploits, Clawroline set out to hunt for and defeat them herself.

Within Wondaria Remains, an abandoned amusement park, Kirby and Elfilin come across Clawroline in a circus tent. With them in her sights, Clawroline throws off her costume and attempts to eliminate them. However, she is defeated by Kirby. After recovering from their battle, Clawroline would have another chance to finish them off in Redgar Forbidden Lands. Nonetheless, she is defeated again.

After Kirby destroyed Fecto Elfilis's body and Elfilin closed the large dimensional rift pulling the forgotten world and Planet Popstar on a crash course towards each other, Clawroline and the other animals were freed from Fecto Forgo's mind control. Clawroline, now restored as Carol, then came across an unconscious Elfilin, who had used up all his strength to close the rift. Carol took Elfilin and nursed him back to health, allowing him to visit Kirby once more.

As everyone celebrates the heroes' victory, Carol noticed that Leongar was missing. She began searching for him until she came across a mysterious dimensional rift atop the Observation Tower in Waddle Dee Town. Sensing Leongar somewhere within, she calls up Kirby and Elfilin to help investigate before the rift opens and sucks them in, transporting them to Isolated Isles: Forgo Dreams, a world created by Fecto Forgo's dreams where their spirit, Soul Forgo, retreated to, taking Leongar along with them. Soul Forgo shattered his soul into pieces and scattered them throughout the realm in order to make him their vessel, placing Kirby on a quest to restore and rescue Leongar.

After Kirby had collected the soul pieces and defeated Forgo Leon and Morpho Knight, he and Elfilin were unable to awake Leongar, assuming he had perished in the incident. Fortunately, Carol and the other animals of the kingdom arrived with more pieces of his soul, which they send to the animal king. Thus, Leongar reawakened, now back as Leon, and Carol runs up to hug him. Kirby, Elfilin, and all the animals return to the dimension of the forgotten world, celebrating the return of their king.

Battle[]

At the start of the battle, Clawroline uses her long claws to slash at Kirby, often slashing twice or thrice before pausing. She can also attempt to jump on Kirby, or dash forward rapidly to slash at him. These attacks do heavy damage if Kirby gets hit, so the best way to avoid these attacks is to dodge or slide away.

During her second phase when she reaches half of her health left, she will jump up to the poles nearby of the arena. She can fling talons at Kirby when up on the poles, which has to be outrun. After throwing enough talons, she will move the spotlight to target where Kirby is at, and immediately slam where the spotlight is, creating two sets of harmful shockwaves, but rendering her vulnerable as she tries to pull out her claws from the ground. Additionally, she can become invisible and slowly track where Kirby is before reappearing and slashing at him.

Clawroline is refought in Gathering of the Beast Council, the antepenultimate level in Redgar Forbidden Lands. She is the final boss to be battled in the level. Much like Gorimondo and Sillydillo, she starts the battle on the second phase, with all of her attacks available. She can also be fought in the Colosseum on both the Meta Knight Cup and the Ultimate Cup.

These two were famous leaders of the animal kingdom...until Leon found ID-F86. After that, he began speaking in a language Carol couldn't understand-she only speaks in meows-and formed the Brutal Beast Pack. She still believed in him, so she created a new identity of her own and followed along.

Etymology[]

"Clawroline" is a portmanteau of "claw," referencing her cat-like features and form of attack; and "Caroline," a female given name. Her true name, Carol, is simply a shortening of Caroline.

Trivia[]

  • According to Shinya Kumazaki, Clawroline's sound effects came from his pet cat, named "Sora-kun."
  • In the English localization, Carol is said to have changed her name to Clawroline, with Carol being her true name. In Japanese, Carol is never stated to have changed her name, with Caroline being her full name while Carol is simply a nickname.
  • There are several hints that foreshadow Leongar and Clawroline being related.
    • The most obvious fact is that they both are felines (and are also panthers, a species of big cat). Considering the other main members of the Beast Pack are a gorilla (Gorimondo) and an armadillo (Sillydillo), having two members from the same genus of animals would mean more than just a simple coincidence.
    • They both pull off their capes before posing in their introduction of their names and titles. Even moreso, their arms are almost in the same position.
    • They both have several identical movesets and similar attacks in their battle, as they both strike with their claws, dash, and make short jumps.
    • Phantom Clawroline, Clawroline's illusory counterpart, is able to use the same claw pattern attacks Leongar uses.
