Oh boy! It's the Fighting Copy Ability, complete with tons of techniques! Grab and throw foes with ease. You can even grab and throw... your friends! Throw them against rocks and other things you want to smash.
— Flavor Text • Kirby Star Allies

Fighter is a Copy Ability in the Kirby series, debuting in Kirby Super Star.

Games

Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra

Fighter focuses on using various martial arts techniques to deal damage. Many of Fighter's moves have variations that depend on how long the player holds the button, with taps executing quick, but weak moves, and holding executing slower, but more powerful moves. In addition to being obtained from the Knuckle Joe enemy, who is its Helper, Fighter can also be obtained from the Iron Mam mid-boss.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad

Fighter still has a variety of moves, unlike most abilities, but it no longer has the distinction of executing different moves based on how long the button is held, with one exception. Fighter can be obtained from Boxin, Gray Golem when performing the Golem Upper, and Box Boxer.

In Kirby: Squeak Squad, many of the moves were given altered properties, and a grab was added, based on Ninja. Upon obtaining the Fighter Ability Scroll, located in the first Treasure Chest in Stage 3 of Ice Island, Fighter can now charge its strongest projectile without needing to be at low health. Fighter can be obtained from Boxin and Box Boxer.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition

Fighter returns with its techniques from Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra, along with its spinning kick, charge shot, dive kick, and somersault techniques from Kirby: Squeak Squad. Its charge shots are now Force Blasts, and the most powerful variant, Giga Force Blast, has a fire element, allowing it to light cannon fuses and destroy Ice Blocks. Fighter is obtained from Knuckle Joe.

In Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition, there is a Fighter Combat Chamber in Apricot Atrium. Fighter is also usable in Magolor Race 2, 3, and EX.

Techniques

Fighter has three special attacks, each being one of the three kicks from its Spin Kick move; it is also the only Copy Ability that can alternate between its normal attacks and special attacks to perform different combos. In the Super Smash Bros. series

Fighter Kirby appears as a collectible trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Kirby's Neutral Attack is Vulcan Jab, and its finisher move added in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U is Smash Punch (albeit without the energy wave). Kirby's Side Smash and Forward Air Attack resemble versions of Spin Kick. Kirby's Backward Air Attack resembles his most recent version of Double Kick (albeit backward and without the energy wave).

Fighter Kirby in the anime

The Fighter ability in Kirby: Right Back at Ya! is most similar to the version in Kirby Super Star. The look of it is the same, with a simple red headband. Kirby uses all of the same attacks as the version in Kirby Super Star at some point in the series.

He most often gets the ability in episodes featuring Knuckle Joe, from inhaling one of his attacks. Fighter is one of his strongest abilities, used against powerful monsters like Masher, with the strongest attack being the Rising Break.

Fighter Kirby's abilities are best displayed in episode 53, where he participates in a battle royale against the Martial Arts All-Stars.

Transformation Sequence

In the transformation sequence, a band of light forms into the headband. It comically comes off his head, but he catches it and puts it on. He then makes energy pulses with his hands and does a little spin. Fighter, along with Bomb, is the third most frequently used Copy Ability in the anime, with six appearances in total. The only time he spin kicks without Knuckle Joe is during the battle with Teacher Creature.

Trivia

  • The red headband Kirby wears for this ability appears to be a homage to the Street Fighter character, Ryu.
    • An even bigger reference to that series, however, may be that Fighter Kirby can use fighting techniques like firing energy blasts or "Hadoken." In addition, his Rising Break bears distinct similarities to Shoryuken and his Spin Kick resembles the Tatsumaki Senpukyaku. Kirby's Moon Somersault Kick is also like Flash Kick. The idea that the Fighter ability is a homage to the Street Fighter series is further evidenced by the fact that to perform the Instant Mega Blast in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, the Hadoken's button input must be used.
    • Kirby's Force Blasts are called Hadou Shots internally and in Japanese.
    • In Kirby: Squeak Squad, Fighter Kirby hops in place while putting his arms up during his idle stance, in a similar fashion to a character in the Street Fighter franchise.
    • The Vulcan Jab and its variants could also be homages to martial arts anime, which often feature characters firing a multitude of punches at breakneck speeds in such a way that it creates the illusion of multiple fists attacking the target simultaneously.
    • Another possible reference to Street Fighter is that Kirby has different moves depending on whether the player taps or holds the attack button, which is a mechanic that is always used in that series.
  • With the exception of Kirby Fighters and Kirby Fighters Deluxe, when Red Kirby obtains the Fighter ability, he gains a white headband instead of the trademark red.

  • The artwork of Fighter Kirby in the anime can be seen on the front of the US and European box art of Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, despite Fighter not being in the game.
  • Fighter Kirby's flavor text in Kirby's Return to Dream Land appears to be Kirby talking, as the text speaks in first-person, similar to most flavor texts for the UFO ability.
  • This is one of the only four abilities in Kirby: Triple Deluxe that can break ice blocks, the others are Fire, Hammer, and Circus.
  • According to the What's YOUR Kirby Copy Ability? personality quiz, Fighter Kirby likes to garden in his downtime.
  • The plush produced by Little Buddy of Fighter Kirby appears to have been based solely on the episode Snack Attack - Part II of Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, as nowhere else in the rest of the Kirby series is Fighter portrayed with yellow gloves.
