Checkerboard Chase is a sub-game in the Kirby series, debuting in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.

Games[]

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[]

The objective of the game is to be the last player standing. There are four difficulty levels: "Easy", "Medium", "Hard", and "Intense!". The player has to press A to turn the blocks in front of them from their default color into their own color (P1 pink, P2 yellow, P3 green, P4 blue), and they fall sequentially away from the player. Any player standing on a falling block falls off with it. Falling off a fifth time means that player is out of the game. The size of the board decreases with the number of remaining players—from 8x8 to 6x6 to 4x4, when there are only two players remaining.

The game takes place on an 8x8 checkerboard above a rocky island with a volcano that features a star-shaped caldera. On "Intense!" difficulty, the stage is in space above Planet Popstar. The player can be Kirby, Waddle Dee, Adeleine, or King Dedede; having the same character picked more than once results in a different color for players who picked later.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[]

Checkerboard Chase appears as one of the playable sub-games in Merry Magoland. Here, the player can play as Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede, and Bandana Waddle Dee. Colors are based on player character instead of player number. Once the player clears all difficulties, a faster-paced version of each difficulty called High-Speed Mode is unlocked.
