Bumper Crop Bump is a sub-game in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. It is played on a grassy orchard or forest where the player holds a basket to catch fruit falling from the trees. On Intense! difficulty, jewels drop instead of fruit, but these are equivalent.
Gameplay[]
The goal is to have the most fruit (or jewels) when the timer finishes. Characters move left and right to catch fruit in their baskets, pressing A when next to another player will switch positions with that player, and if nothing is next to the player on the other side, the player will skid some distance.
The rate at which fruits drop from the trees increase as time gets close to running out. Besides fruits, bombs in the form of flashing fruits (or jewels) may drop as well, and the proportion of these compared to fruit increases as time runs out. Catching a bomb will reset the pieces of fruit collected to zero. Anyone around the bomb's explosion will lose fruit as well.
Etymology[]
"Bumper Crop Bump" combines the term "bumper crop," which refers to an unusually productive harvest, referencing the act of harvesting fruit; and "bump," referring to the action of bumping other players to swap positions.
Its Japanese name, とるとるバトル (Toru Toru Batoru), comes from the Japanese verb とる (toru), which often means "to take," but can also mean "to pick up" or "to harvest" (取る), "to catch" (捕る), "to pick" (採る), "to harvest" (穫る), etc. all relating to collecting the falling fruit; and バトル (Batoru), which means "battle," referring to competing with the other players to get the most fruit.
