— Collectible description • Kirby Battle Royale |
Bomb is a Copy Ability in the Kirby series, debuting in Kirby Super Star.
Games
Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra
Bomb focuses on using explosives to attack at a distance or with strategic placement. Bomb comes with a blue cap and black bombs. Kirby can change the trajectory of his throws by holding down the attack button to make it thrown higher. In addition to being obtained from the Poppy Bros. Jr. enemy, who is also its Helper, Bomb can be obtained from Jungle Bomb, the Poppy Bros. Sr. mid-boss (which had given the Crash Copy Ability prior to this game), and the Combo Cannon's bombs.
In Kirby Super Star Ultra, Bomb can also be obtained from Combo Cannon's cannonballs (which had given the Yo-Yo Copy Ability prior to this game), Perot (who replaces Poppy Bros. Jr. in Revenge of the King), Masked Dedede's missiles, and Wham Bam Jewel's tiki bombs.

Throw a bomb | Bomb Throw | Y | Ready Bomb + B | Kirby throws his bomb, which follows a ballistic trajectory. The angle can be increased by holding the attack button. | 16 (bomb), 26 (explosion only) |
Straight throw | Straight Throw | Dash + Y | Dash + Bomb Throw | Kirby throws a bomb straight forward. Kirby quickly dashes forward a short distance during this move, and it has notable end lag. | 16 |
Set a bomb | Bomb Drop | Y (near enemy) | B near foe | Kirby places a timed bomb on top of a nearby enemy. | 26 |
Drop a bomb | Bomb Set | ↓ + Y | ↓ + B | Kirby places a timed bomb in front of him. | 16 (bomb), 26 (explosion only) |
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Bomb is limited to standard bomb throwing. However, when combined with other Copy Abilities to create Power Combos, it can be used to create various explosive options. Bomb is capable of destroying black color-coded blocks. Bomb can be obtained from Poppy Bros. Jr., Skud, Blowfish, Pedo, Rockn, and Miracle Matter's Bomb form.
Power Combos
Power Combo | Description |
---|---|
Bomb | Kirby throws a bomb by pressing B. Holding B allows Kirby to throw the bomb farther. |
Burning + Bomb (Fireworks) |
Kirby creates a fireworks explosion around him by pressing B. This move gives Kirby an upward boost and can be used up to three times consecutively, each with a bigger explosion than the last. |
Stone + Bomb (Dynamite) |
Kirby throws a bundle of dynamite by pressing B. The dynamite explodes upon contact with an enemy or after a set period of time. Touching the dynamite will cause it to bounce, allowing Kirby to change its position after it has been thrown. Its explosion covers the entire screen, but can also damage Kirby. By pressing ↓ when dynamite is active, Kirby will put on a hard hat, protecting him from the damage of the explosion. |
Ice + Bomb (Explosive Snowman) |
Kirby sets a bomb on his head and disguises himself as a snowman by pressing B. The bomb explodes upon contact with an enemy or after a set period of time. This explosion does not damage Kirby, and sends off snow particles that can freeze enemies in blocks of ice. |
Needle + Bomb (Spike Bomb) |
Kirby transforms into a form that greatly resembles Gordo by pressing B. Kirby can slowly float around in any direction, but will explode upon contact with an enemy, after a set period of time, or after pressing the B button while in this form. Upon detonation, Kirby will fire off the spikes in eight directions. |
Bomb + Bomb (Tri-Missile Attack) |
Kirby opens his mouth and spits out homing missiles by pressing B. Holding B allows Kirby to spit out more missiles, with a maximum of three. |
Bomb + Spark (Light Bulb) |
Kirby transforms into a light bulb with feet by holding B. As a light bulb, Kirby will be electrified and can damage enemies on contact; he can also light up dark areas. Kirby's light bulb will eventually burn out and shatter if held for too long, although the shattered glass can damage nearby enemies. |
Bomb + Cutter (Explosive Ninja Stars) |
Kirby throws a ninja star by pressing B. The ninja star flies straight ahead, and if it makes contact with an enemy, it will stick into them briefly before exploding. Performing this move in the air resets Kirby's momentum. |
Kirby Air Ride
Bomb can only use one bomb in this iteration, but it creates a massive explosion, similarly to Crash. Bomb is obtained from Balloon Bomber.
Techniques
Move | Controls | Description |
---|---|---|
Bomb Throw | A | Kirby throws his bomb, causing a massive explosion and expending the Copy Ability. Kirby can throw the bomb farther distances by holding down A for a longer period of time. |
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad
Bomb has multiple moves, as it did in its debut; Bombs can now be aimed by holding up or down before throwing, but it can no longer use Bomb Drop. It also makes use of the Fire element, allowing it to light Cannon fuses. Bomb can be obtained from Foley, as well as from bombs thrown/dropped by Bombar, Boxy, Moley, and Wiz.
In Kirby: Squeak Squad, Bomb can also light candles, incinerate grass and bushes, as well as vaporize clouds, snow, and ice. Upon obtaining the Bomb Ability Scroll, located in the Big Treasure Chest in Stage 3 of Secret Sea, Kirby can now mix a Bomb Ability bubble with either Ice or Spark Ability bubbles to get versions of bomb that are imbued with the Ice or Thunder elements respectively. Bomb can be obtained from Foley, as well as bombs thrown/dropped by Doc, Mrs. Moley, Daroach, and Dark Daroach.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land
Bomb returns with its techniques from Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra, except Straight Throw has now been replaced with Bomb Bowl, and Bomb Throw's aiming system is much more precise. Its appearance has been changed to give it a dark blue party hat with yellow and green star decorations, a red ribbon, and a blue diamond in the front; the bombs are also decorated with stars, and their explosions are more reminiscent of fireworks. Bomb can be obtained from Poppy Bros. Jr., Foley, Mr. Dooter's bombs, Bomb Machine's missiles, Metal General's missiles, and HR-D3's missiles.
A Bomb Challenge can be unlocked by collecting 50 Energy Spheres, and Bomb can be accessed from the third Copy Ability Room for 60 Energy Spheres.

In Kirby Fighters Deluxe, Bomb's Rare Outfit changes its hat to be decorated with orange and purple diamonds, a rainbow-colored pom-pom, and a pink heart in the front; the bombs are now purple and decorated with pink hearts.

Kirby Star Allies
Similarly to Kirby: Squeak Squad, Bomb can be enhanced by the elements from other Copy Abilities; unlike Kirby: Squeak Squad, it doesn't have the Sizzle element by default, and so can be enhanced to receive such. Bombs can also be picked up if they haven't detonated, allowing other characters to use them. In addition to being obtained from Poppy Bros. Jr., who is its Friend Helper, Bomb can also be obtained from Vividria's parachute bombs and Void Termina's/Void Soul's/Void's attacks that create black stars.

Trivia
- This Copy Ability's cap's original appearance is a specific reference to Poppy Bros. Jr.'s and Poppy Bros. Sr.'s attire.
- This Copy Ability's original appearance may also be, like Sword, a reference to Link, because of the hat and the bomb itself. Link uses both swords and bombs, and wears a floppy cap in The Legend of Zelda series.
- Even more, in Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra, Kirby holds, drops, and throws bombs in exactly the same manner as Link in A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, and Ocarina of Time.
- Similar to Link, Kirby can also hurt himself with said bombs, but in the latter's case, he can only do so if he is still holding onto one.
- Bomb appeared in the trailer of Kirby GCN, having some qualities from previous Kirby games, like Bomb Drop. The ability has also shown a completely different hat unlike the previous Kirby games, which resembles an orange party hat with yellow stars. There was also a new Bomb enemy, which rode on a big ball around the size of a Golem. A similarly redesigned hat was introduced in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, which also redesigned the bombs to have blue star marks.
- Kirby Fighters Deluxe and Kirby Battle Royale also provide alternative party hat designs for Bomb.
- While there are Ice Bombs and Thunder Bombs, there are no Fire Bombs because the regular bomb already has the element of fire.
- This is bypassed in Kirby Star Allies, where Bomb can be imbued with Sizzle. This is likely because Bomb no longer retains its fire properties.
- In Kirby Fighters Deluxe, Bomb's rare hat allows Kirby to throw bombs covered in heart patterns. According to designer Kenichiro Kita, this design was chosen to appeal to girls.[1]
- For Kirby's 25th Anniversary, Nintendo held a public poll asking which Copy Ability was the most popular, where the winner would be incorporated into the then-upcoming game Kirby: Battle Royale. In it, Bomb is erroneously labelled as debuting from Kirby's Adventure instead of Kirby Super Star.
- Despite only being able to hold one bomb at a time, Bomb Dunk can set a bomb on multiple foes' heads.
