| Reason: Because the Assist Trophy item is exclusive to the (separate) Super Smash Bros. series, it doesn't fit/belong in the Kirby lore, even if it does use a few Kirby characters. | |
An Assist Trophy is an item in the Super Smash Bros. series debuting in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Appearance[]

An Assist Trophy contains a silhouette of a humanoid figure encased in a dome container. The container rests upon a Trophy stand. The color of the dome and figure are light blue and white respectively in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but are rainbow and black starting from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.
General Information[]

When picked up, it allows the user to summon a guest character from another game franchise to either aid them in battle or cause an effect that affects all players. Whenever a user grabs the item, they must hold the trophy upwards to utilize it; this animation happens automatically whenever the holder is holding the trophy and is on the ground. During this posing animation, the player cannot control their character making them vulnerable for attacks; the player can still move around and attack in the air even if they are holding the trophy if they are launched, though most of the time, being hit while holding an Assist Trophy will make the holder drop the item.
There are a total of three Kirby series characters who can be summoned via an Assist Trophy: Chef Kawasaki, Knuckle Joe, and Nightmare Wizard. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, players now have the ability to KO Assist Trophy fighters when they take enough damage, however, many Assists cannot be interacted with such as Nightmare Wizard unlike the former two aforementioned characters.
Also in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the option to choose which Assist Trophy character to summon during Training mode. Each character has their own character profile picture to be selected to summon, as well as a short description of their abilities.
List of Kirby series Assist Trophy characters[]
| Character | Icon | Appears in | Training Mode Blurb | Information |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chef Kawasaki |
|
Grabs hold of opponents and mixes them into a pot. Once the broth is ready, he'll make health recovery items! | Chef Kawasaki will jump around and throw plates at enemies. If an opponent gets too close, he will pull out his ladle and extend it to grab them. If successful, then Chef Kawasaki puts them into a pot and begins to cook them, similarly to Kirby’s Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. When the cooking process is done, the opponent is launched and food appears out of the pot. Chef Kawasaki will leave after using this move or after a short period of being summoned, always leaving behind a piece of food before leaving. | |
| Knuckle Joe |
|
Opens with a Vulcan Jab, and then unleashes Smash Punch or Rising Break. | Knuckle Joe will jump around and approach enemies to trap enemies in his large-ranged Vulcan Jab. When opponents are assaulted with this move, Knuckle Joe will either use Rising Break or Smash Punch as a finisher. Rising Break is an electrical uppercut whereas Smash Punch is a powerful punch that also launches a ball of energy. If Knuckle Joe is too far from an opponent, he will use the projectile from Smash Punch in hopes it’ll hit someone. | |
| Nightmare |
|
Covers the stage in a deep darkness. Can't be KO'd. | Shrouds the entire screen in darkness forcing all players to fight blindly. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, shields and other cosmetic effects from attacks are still visible, however in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, only the cosmetic effects can be seen making it more difficult for players to track where they are. |

| “ | When talking about the guaranteed hard hitter of Kirby’s world, you’ve got to say something about his fists! A storm of Vulcan Jabs rain down, and then Knuckle Joe can finish his foes off with one of the following two special moves! Smash Punch! Rising Break! He’s... He’s strong. He’s been doing some extreme training, I think.” |

| “ | This enemy hails from the Kirby series. After he first appears as a power orb, he then changes into wizard form and proceeds to turn the entire screen pitch black. The players, of course, get lost in the blackness--this includes the CPU characters, who will make mistakes just like human players.” |

Trivia[]
- In the original Japanese version, unlike Knuckle Joe (and Meta Knight) who both are voiced by the same voice actors as in Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, Nightmare is actually voiced by a different person, that being Hisao Egawa instead of Banjō Ginga.
